Rita Shane Obituary
The first woman to graduate from Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University), Rita was the last surviving member of Sir George's 1937 first graduating class, the "Guinea Pigs." Just 9% of her 1942 McGill Medical School graduating class were women. She kept her birth name upon marriage in 1946, anticipating Quebec law by 35 years. Friends and family will remember her keen mind, impeccable style, passion for long white convertibles, and love for her two universities. The family thanks Drs. Todd McConnell, Benjamin Schiff, Margaret Hughes, and Zoe Mamalingas; Emmanuel Noel, Joanne and Francois Leger, Inna Palekhova, Hee-Soon Son, and Teodora Batista; and especially Omega Garcia, Jean-Guy Boyer, and Lan Wu. Informal celebration of Rita's life on Friday, July 20, 1 p.m., at Centre Funeraire Cote-des-Neiges, 4525 Cote-des-Neiges, Mtl., (514) 342-8000.

It was a pleasure knowing Dr. Shane. She and I had some lively chats about every topic imaginable. Her constant pride in her son was so great to see.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of your mother. I was very fond of her and I was hoping she would have been well enough to attend the 75th Anniversary of Sir George.
Your mother and I were honoured by Concordia on the same evening Nov.26,1992. Dr. Shane received the Award of Merit and I received the Distinguished Service Award.
I know she will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was certainly a very great lady.
May your fond memories of her be a source of comfort to you at this time of sorrow.
