Robert Edward Ahrens died at the age of 91 on Wednesday, September 12. He was in the care of Kaiser hospice at his home in Concord California. His last words were "thank you". He was born on January 27, 1927 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to the late Isabelle (MacKenzie) Ahrens and the late Frederick Ahrens and married to JoAnne (Rucker) Ahrens. At the age of 17 he joined the Merchant Marines and from 1947 to 1951, Bob served in the Army in the Korean War. He worked in the Newspaper industry as a pressman in Cheyenne WY, Monterey, CA and San Francisco CA retiring in 1993. He was physically active his entire life bicycling, snow skiing, and swimming. Into his 80's he was known to ride 50 miles/day including Mt. Diablo. His generosity and kind spirit were coupled with a spontaneous curiosity. He was preceded in death by his wife, son James Edward Ahrens; brother Joseph Ahrens and sister Margaret (Ahrens) Sommers. Bob is survived by sister, Clara Isabel (Ahrens) Lange (Tulsa, OK); three daughters, Elizabeth Ahrens Gourley (Interlochen, MI) Shawnna Lynn Costanzo (Concord, CA), and Deborah Kay Child (Cheyenne, WY); four granddaughters Stacy Lynn (Child) Broda (Cheyenne, WY), Codey Jean (Child) Stocks (Dixon, WY), Moira Mackenzie Gourley (Santa Monica, CA), and Theresa Lynn Costanzo (Concord, CA) and six great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his adored dog, Mukti. Those who wish may donate in Bob's name to a charity of their choice or Bikes for the World , 88Bikes , Health Well Foundation , or Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis . Friends and family are welcome to attend the celebration of life, officiated by Fr. Richard Mangini, on Friday, October 5 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St Bonaventure Catholic Community, 5562 Clayton Rd, Concord.
