Carol J. Brown

In loving memory of Carol J. Brown, who passed May 1, 2013. Carol was born in Bluffton, Indiana, on October 16, 1928 near the banks of the Wabash, to Marie Anderson Brown and Everett I. Brown. Carol has been an Indianapolis resident since childhood. She was a member of the 1946 class of Shortridge High School.

Carol was a beloved mother, grandmother and aunt, who loved and cherished her family and friends and always put them first. She was married to Ralph Kettman Higgs, deceased, and she's blessed with two sons, Ralph E. Brown of Los Angeles, CA, David E. Brown (Lisa K. Brown) of Spring, TX, and daughter, Janice C. Brown of Indianapolis, IN. Added to her blessings are four grandchildren, David I. Brown, Daniel A. Brown, Kristen A. Brown, and Brian Brown Hendrickson. Carol's greatest joy was being with her family. She was enthusiastically involved in her children's school activities and Girl Scouts. She loved to travel the country, Europe, and Asia. Some of the organizations she was involved with included the Phi Lambda Theta Honorary, Delta Beta Chapter, Psi Iota Xi, Daughters of the American Revolution, St. Margaret's Hospital Guild, Children's Museum Guild.

Always wanting to be a teacher, Carol graduated from Butler University, with the Eliza A. Blaker Education Award. Her teaching experience included John Strange School of MSD of Washington Township, School 80 of IPS, Carmel Clay Schools, Butler Summer Laboratory School, Butler University School of Education Instructor, and earned her Master's Degree at the University of Wisconsin. With the desire of joining her family firm, the Everett I. Brown Architects and Engineering Co., Carol attended Columbia University for her doctoral study in School Building Planning and Decorating. She joined the family firm as an education consultant and color coordinator, and remained as a general partner for 34 years. She decorated over 600 schools in the state of Indiana and Illinois. She enjoyed working with her family and the many school boards, superintendents and teachers. As she would say… "Always, I'll be loving you always."

Dear Family: Everything in this obituary is true - Carol had many great qualities: character, integrity, persistence, faith, generosity, hope, and a natural sense of humor; a magnetic smile, to be greatly missed. She was a wonderful friend from age 13. Sincerely, Barbara Burch Merrell SHS 1946 and Dr. James Merrell SHS 1948

Carol was my phone buddy for years as we solved all the world and family concerns in hours of conversations. She was like a sister to me, My mom taught piano to several in her family. We had much in common. My deepest sympathy to all of her wonderful family. With much love, Carolyn Chenoweth Workman (Chizel)
