Robert Austin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 16, 2025.
Westbrook Maine - Robert Charles Austin, known by everyone as Bob, passed away on December 7, 2025, at his home in Westbrook, Maine. He was born in Portland on April 19, 1947 and graduated from Deering High School in 1965. He was a proud Marine and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from 1967 to 1973, showing his pride and admiration over his lifetime by exclaiming "Semper Fi" and "Hoorah" often. He worked for over three decades, retiring as Vice President of commercial lending at Casco Bank, which later became Key Bank, and was proud of his accomplishments over his career. After retiring from his banking career, he kept busy working part-time at BJ's and Macy's.

Bob was well known in the local community for his dedication to running. He maintained a running streak for over 13 years not missing a day, regardless of the harsh Maine weather conditions. He was an icon on the streets of Portland, recognized as the man running all over town even being featured in the Portland Press Herald for his commitment. Running home from work was a regular part of his daily commute. He was also a dedicated gym member and weight lifter, who at the peak of his fitness career, worked out for close to 3 hours daily creating many friendships with people who shared his passion.

Bob had a deep love for animals. He cared for countless creatures throughout his life; feeding strays, adopting shelter animals, and volunteering at the Greater Portland Animal Refuge League. Above all else, Bob loved his family deeply and was a proud father and grandfather, often referring to his children and grandchildren as the "apple of his eye."

Bob is survived by his daughters Kimberly Austin and her husband, Jesse Schweppe, Diane Randall and her husband, Scott, his four grandchildren: John, Charles, Henry, and Wren, his former wife Joan Austin, and brother Ken Austin and his family. The family extends special appreciation to his friends who offered support. Per Bob's request he wanted to express his gratitude to addiction counselor Danielle Rideout, and Dr. Amy Wood. A private family service will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos can be shared with the family at Legacy.com. Donations can be made in Bob's memory to the Greater Portland Animal Refuge League and/or The Portland Recovery Community Center.

Sorry to hear about Bob´s passing. He was an excellent and dedicated worker. He always held a job. To Bob retirement meant he would retire from full time work and transfer to part-time work. Good guy. RIP Marty Joyce
