Robert BENNETT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 11 to Mar. 15, 2023.
ROBERT (BOB) MARCHANT BENNETT October 31, 1923 - February 23, 2023 Bob was a devoted husband to his wife, Marion (Game). They had been married 77 years. He was born in Walkerville/ Windsor, Ontario, the son of Percy and Florence (Roberts) Bennett, and brother of the late Donald and the late Margaret. He was an inspirational and kind father to his four children: Eleanor (Michael), the late Gregory, Douglas (Laura) and Cameron. His eight grandchildren, Andrea (James), Colin (Heather), Claire, Lynne (Enn), Angus (Justine), Janis, Clyde and Shaun, and his five great- grandchildren, Oscar, Zeke, Mila, Luukas and Austen, brought delight to him when they visited. We all loved the thoughts he shared when the extended family gathered for Christmas dinner. His quest to learn never ended, and he imbued his children with the same love of learning. He loved a good debate. Bob was proud to be a professional engineer. He spent his career in the federal public service in Ottawa, initially in the Army Signal Corps and then at the federal Departments of Transport and Communication. He was a family man: supper at 6:00, long summer vacations at the Game cottage on Lake Huron, adventurous Sunday joy rides in the country. If something could be repaired, he found a way. He and Marion loved square dancing, theatre, music, travel and their friends and neighbours in Manor Park, where they lived from 1948 until they moved into Colonel By Retirement Residence. The staff at Colonel By were caring, and he enjoyed learning about each one of them as an individual. Special thanks to Catherine. There will be a Memorial Service for both Bob and Marion upon her passing, and they will be interred in a companion urn. Bob and Marion were pleased to be able to support charities dedicated to health, education, social support, the arts and conservation.

My deepest condolences to Marion and all the family. Bob was my first cousin once removed as he was my mother Hazel McClaughry's cousin. The last time I recall seeing him was in 1993 when we were traveling with my parents. His granddaughter Andrea and my daughter wrote for a few years but unfortunately lost touch with each other before the internet became big. Hazel and Andy (Mom & Dad) likely visited a few more times as they RVed east every summer until about 2001. I used to receive email updates from Bob but they stopped coming likely about the time they moved into the care home. Margaret still kept in touch until she passed which I learned the same way I learned of Bob's passing by searching for an obituary. With his passing I will have lost touch with the remaining Bennett family that is in Ontario and I only have one cousin still living in BC. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Bob and Marion were long-time members of Heritage Ottawa who came out to support countless lectures, walking tours, and AGMs. I remember many conversations with them about the importance of preserving Ottawa's heritage buildings. They believed in their value for future generations.
On behalf of Heritage Ottawa, please accept our heartfelt condolences.
Warm regards,
Carolyn Quinn
