A fond memory- My husband Chris was working in Florida and away for weeks at a time. We had a police officer visiting the house to speak to me as I had made nuisance complaint of late evening door-bell "ringing and running" a few days before. Seeing the police car in the driveway, Bob came right up to our front door. I didn't answer when he rang and so he came around the back of the house. Our son Ian, who was home from school, let him in through the deck door. He then appeared my home office door wanting to make sure we were all right. Bob was a man who took action when others were in need. Bob did indeed earn his wings here on earth. I send you my deepest sympathies and pray for your healing.

I was a young football player trying to get stronger, both while in HS and while at NMU as a player. In that tiny weight room at IMHS down the basement, Bob came down there one day and coached me up on my awful squatting technique. I will never forget, he put one of those fat weight belts on me, with the fat part of the belt up front, and the buckle in the back. He reefed on that dang buckle I lurched off the ground. It was tough to breathe even. Then we loaded up the bar, and bam, I had it down, impossible to dip forward on the squat! Years later as a coach, I used the same technique for those who needed it. Bob was always a great mentor. Bob was quick to invite me to stay at his house, years later, and attend his football camps, as I was a young and dumb coach in Oshkosh. Nobody had a bigger heart, a bigger presence, or bigger impact on all that knew him. He always remembered his roots and was loyal, always taking time to visit my folks when he was home, year after year. My dad was one of his coaches, and I know how much that meant to him.

As part of one of the designated dynasty eras in UP sports (IMHS 1981-1983) Bob was a major contributor across multiple sports, a star. However, he appreciated and acknowledged contributions from all teammates. For example, after winning the 1982 Boys 1600M UP final in Marquette Bob and Nicky Johnson congratulated me in the infield for the accomplishment. I was a bit stunned...here's two football stars (and outstanding shotput and discus competitors as well) giving a big "way to go!" to the scrawny 125 lbs. (soaking wet) runner. To this day I try to remember and apply that very important lesson Bob gave all those years ago. Thank you Bob, it was a privilege and honor to be your teammate.

I´m so sorry to hear about Bob´s passing and send my sincere sympathy to his family. I was a fellow member of Iron Mountain Class of 1982 and we will miss him. Bob and his sisters Liz and Kathy were some of my first friends when we moved to Iron Mountain in time to start kindergarten and we grew up a block away from each other all through our school years. May you feel God´s comfort during this difficult time.

Bob was one of the most genuine and generous people I have ever met. He was a patient of mine, but became a trusted friend. I have known Bob for almost 20 years. He is truly one of a kind and he will be missed greatly.

I remember Bob getting cut from the 7th grade basketball team. Bob asked to be added to the team. He was the 21st player. By 8th grade he was a starter.
I remember Bob getting pulled up to JV football after a week or so on the freshman team. Some of us were up before the first practice. Bob had to earn it. He had a big corset back brace, a scar from an emergency operation, big thick glasses twisted in his too-small helmet, and a big proud smile.
I remember Bob doing squats right AFTER football season and sitting closer to the front of the class when he started getting recruited. As president of a club he awarding money to help a figure skater get a coach.
By 12th grade Bob was a star in football and a foundation in basketball. He talked big and earned respect.
I see this obituary. It´s done with class. So understated. He was a very successful businessman, football player, and coach. So glad to see that he was a great husband and father. He grew in faith.
I´m sure whenever I hear someone question the value of sports, especially football, or if I hear someone question a young man´s prospects I´ll be sure to think of Bob and his faith, effort, perseverance, and heart.
I´m sure the good Lord will have Bob on a committee up there. He´ll do a good job and maybe keep him from saying too much.
I´m proud to have known Bob.
Billy

Not long after Rich and I started dating, we babysat for Robert and Katherine. Liz went with her parents to a family funeral. Bob came into the room holding the sleeves of his hand knit sweater, which he cut off because he was "hot". He was three and cute as a button. I will miss him forever. Meanwhile Katherine flushed a whole roll of toilet paper down the toilet in a trailer. Plumbing was backing up all the way down the line of trailers. Funny, we weren't asked to babysit any more!!!
