Robert (Bob) Prokop Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 1 to Mar. 2, 2023.
Robert (Bob) Prokop was born in 1952 in Patterson, New Jersey to Bernadine and Alexander Prokop. At the age of four, his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Bob loved life in the desert and would often recount tales of hiking and wilderness camping. The second of six children, Bob was a devoted brother and shared many fond memories of adventures with his older brother, Richard, reading to his younger brother, Andrew, and helping to care for his youngest siblings, Karen, Janet, and Kenny.

In 1974, Bob graduated with High Distinction from Arizona State University where he studied Russian. In 1975 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California where he met his wife, Diane Tanguay. Bob and Diane wed in Connecticut on October 16, 1976. Together, they were stationed in Augsburg, Germany where they served two tours and made lifelong friendships. Bob went on to have a fulfilling civilian career with the National Security Agency until he retired in 2009. His work took him around the globe, including Korea, England, Kuwait, and New Zealand.

Bob was a man of boundless curiosity and generosity. His passions were almost too numerous to list, including languages, literature, astronomy, music, watercolor painting, cinema, and his Catholic faith. In his retirement, Bob dove into amateur astronomy and served on the board of the Howard Astronomical League. Among other publications, he is the author of two studies, Eyes to See: Observing the Nearest Stars and Petrified with Astonishment: Homeric Themes in Doc Smith's Skylark Novels. He also devoted himself to advocating for peace through his participation in Veterans for Peace, and supported many charitable organizations, advancing humanitarian aims across the globe. Everyone who met Bob walked away with a new friend.

Above all, Bob loved his family. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Lagasse) and Anna (Miller), sons-in-law, Daniel and Ryan, and grandchildren, Alexandra, Thomas, Cameron, and Joseph. He relished reading stories to them, playing games, watching movies, drawing, and enjoying long, meandering talks. He is greatly missed and forever loved.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Diane, brother, Richard, and father, Alexander.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, March 30th from 4-7pm at Matthew's 1600 in Catonsville, Maryland.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 31st at 10am at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Historic Ellicott City with a reception immediately following.

I will always remember Bob having a meal ready for "the Broads" in the colorful flat in Cheltenham when we got back from gallivanting around England. And forcing me to watch Fritz Lang“s Metropolis. And sending me beautiful pictures of nebulae. He was a class act and I will miss him.

Those who have brought us joy, made us laugh, and shown us love have given us the lasting gifts of a beautiful life and blessed our memories forever. Even as we mourn, we can remember the good times, be comforted by the love, and celebrate a life well lived.
With deepest sympathy during this difficult time.

Mr. Bob was one of the kindest men I've ever met... He had a heart of gold and was always so generous to those around him... He and I had many long talks about everyday things but mainly family and he told me about his travels... My heart aches for is family for I only knew him a few years and I know how much I'll miss him...

My sincerest condolences to the Prokop family. Bob was one of my closest friends from my early days in Arizona. I met him about 50 years ago, along with his brother, Richard. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing but I know he is still with us. Til we meet again, my friend.

Bob is much older than me. So, my memories aren't many. What I do remember is his love for reading. He taught me to love reading too. One time I had an eye infection and Bob read the whole series of The Lion the witch and the wardrobe to me. I know he loved me.

I work in the pharmacy at Giant Food in Ellicott City . I met Mr. Prokop as a customer MANY years ago . I always enjoyed seeing him and helping in anyway I could . He was always an easy going pleasant person to deal with . We were very friendly discussing family and his grandchildren . He loved them and loved life . I often worried and prayed for him when he was going through medical issues . I was VERY sad to hear he passed away. I will miss his friendly smile and conversations . Sending prayers for him and his whole family. Dianne Whitehair

Bob was my brother and best friend. He was one of the most generous people I have ever known. His love of life, playfulness, curiosity, and dedication to peace were exemplary. He will be missed by so many, but most especially his wonderful daughters and four beautiful grandchildren.
