Robert (Butch) Learned Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2024.
Butch, a resident of Acton, Maine and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024 at the age of 77. Born on October 11, 1946, Butch was a man of great strength, faith, and love.

Born and raised in Rockland, ME, Butch spent his childhood helping his father and grandfather on the "Junaro" and other fishing boats catching lobster and other seafood. This is where his love of boat building and carpentry started.

In his senior year of high school, he moved to Waltham, MA, where a new chapter of his life began. He graduated from Waltham high School on June 9, 1965. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Sherry, and the two shared a deep and enduring love. They were married on June 25th, 1968, in Hawaii, during Butch's service in the Navy.

Butch proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1966-1969 during the Vietnam War, where he was part of the Seabees, the Navy's construction battalion. His dedication and commitment to his fellow servicemen and women were a testament to his strong character and work ethic.

After his honorable service, Butch and Sherry settled in Acton, Maine, where they built a life filled with love and memories. A skilled carpenter, Butch constructed many homes with his father, including his own. His home was a special project, designed after the officers' living quarters from his time in Vietnam, a style he admired and cherished. With his business, Butch's Woodworking, he designed and crafted custom woodwork and cabinetry for numerous businesses and celebrities including Madonna, LL Bean, and Coach. During this time Butch also built and restored a custom 1934 Chevrolet Master 3-Window Coupe Hotrod.

Later in life Butch was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness on September 29, 2007. As a devoted Jehovah's Witness, Butch found great comfort and purpose in his faith. He was an active member of his hall, known for his kindness, humility, and unwavering dedication to his beliefs. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through both joyous and challenging times.

Family was at the heart of Butch's life. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, creating a lifetime of memories filled with laughter, love, and warmth. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sharlene (Sherry) Learned; his children; daughter Stacy Howes and her husband Jeffrey Howes, daughter Robin Learned, son Bryan Learned; his grandchildren, Lindsey Howes, Ian Fagan, Kyle Howes and Ava Fagan; and many other relatives and friends.

Butch will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steadfast faith, and his deep love for his family. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and service to others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1:00 PM at The Kingdom Hall, located at 32 Shaws Ridge Road, Sanford, Maine. A reception will immediately follow at the Sanford Elks located at 13 Elm Street, Sanford, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity or organization of your choice in Butch's memory.

Butch will be deeply missed, but his memory will be cherished forever.

As my big Brother, my first memories of him and I are swinging out and back on the second-floor barn doors on the property that our parents rented in Owls Head Maine. Once caught in the act by our mom; she ended that activity quickly!

I meet Butch while camping. He was quiet but offed advise when needed. Something about seeing him there always made me smile. He will be missed by many. Our prayers for the whole family.
