Robert Crumbaugh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 16, 2023.
Robert E. Crumbaugh, Jr. of Oakmont Green, Carroll County, MD, died March 13th, 2023 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Born September 19, 1925 in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Robert E. Crumbaugh, Sr. and Elsie M. (Miller) Crumbaugh, and brother of James Lee Crumbaugh. He was predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Edna Louise (Ashby) Crumbaugh. Mr. Crumbaugh was retired from the Baltimore County Board of Education. He was employed there as teacher, counselor, and administrator for thirty-seven years. He was an administrator at Franklin and Deer Park Middle Schools as well as Milford Mill and Dulaney High Schools. Prior to this, he worked as a science instructor and held Department chairman positions in both the Ohio and West Virginia school systems. A World War II veteran, he served as a United States Marine participating in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea, the Philippines and islands of the South Pacific. He was a member of the retinue of Commodore Powell that accepted the turn-over of the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, August 25, 1945. He was a graduate of Keyser High School, Keyser, WV. Returning from the war, he graduated from Potomac State College and received degrees from Marshall University, a Master's Degree from West Virginia University, and pursued his doctorate via WVU and Syracuse University. Over the years, working towards his goal in school administration, he found time to serve as the first Health Administrator for South Charleston, WV. He worked as a lab technician for Union Carbide Corporation, and as a biologist at the Biological Research Center, Fort Detrick, MD. He was a member of the Association of Secondary School Principals, the Maryland Retired Teachers and National Teachers Associations, as well as Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of Boyce House Post 41 American Legion, Nancy Hanks Post 3518 VFW of Keyser, National Honor Societies for Science, Psychology and Education and an active member of the U.S.M.C. Association. He enjoyed reading history and science and traveling to historical places. A hobby was researching family genealogy. Mr. Crumbaugh was able to trace his family's ancestry back to the Census of 1591 in the town of Krumbach, Germany. On the English side he was able to trace it to Revolutionary War Colonial Joseph Wood, whom the town of Woodsboro, MD is named after. He felt blessed with his life with Louise, whom he adored. They enjoyed working around their home and took great pride in the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren. Surviving are his three children, Thomas Scott Crumbaugh and wife Kathleen of Upperco, MD, Susan Louise (Crumbaugh) Willingham and husband Wayne of New Creek, WV, and John Edward Crumbaugh and wife Wendy of South Venice, FL. He was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Delores (Crumbaugh) Thrush of New Creek, WV. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Jennifer Darché, Stephanie Gamble, Katie Houdek, and Robert Scott Crumbaugh; Allison Evans and Sara Allen; and Lukas and Kurt Crumbaugh; nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews. A private interment service will be held at the Duling Cemetery in New Creek, WV with the Reverend Vickie Minnich officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Marine Corps National Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rees Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 26, New Creek, WV 26743. It was such an honor to get to know Bob a few months back. A warm, friendly personality, had great love of his wonderful family, and sharing his humor in talking about his teaching days, military days. My sincere and deepest condolences to the Crumbaugh family.
