Croton on Hudson - Robert H Dennard, affectionately know as Bob among his friends and colleagues, died on April 23, 2024, at the age of 91.

Born on September 5, 1932, in Terrell, Texas, Bob exhibited curiosity and talent for science and mathematics from a young age. After earning a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, Bob began his career at IBM in 1958 and spent his extraordinarily long working life there. His invention of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) in the late 1960s was a breakthrough that laid the foundation for modern computer memory systems, and he kept pushing the boundaries of semiconductor technology pioneering the development of scaling theory, also known as Dennard scaling. His groundbreaking work earned him widespread recognition and numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 1988 and the prestigious Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology in 2013. His pioneering spirt and innovative endeavors paved the way for countless technological advancements, shaping the trajectory of our contemporary world. Beyond his remarkable professional achievements, Bob served as a guiding light and mentor to countless aspiring engineers and scientists, leaving an enduring legacy.

In addition to his passion for electronics, Bob was an active member of the community, participating in local Scottish dancing groups and lending his voice to the Taghkanic Chorale, where he shared his love of music with others. His dedication to these pursuits brough him great joy and forged lasting friendships.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Bridges, daughters Amy and Holly Dennard, and grandchildren Quincy Buchanan, Violet Elliot Buchanan, Nathaniel Siler, and Benjamin Siler. His son, Robert H. Dennard Jr., predeceased him.

A memorial service to honor Bob's life and legacy will be held on June 7 at 1 pm at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bob's honor to the Taghkanic Chorale at www.taghkanicchorale.org/donations.
