Services for Robert E. DeSplinter, 82, East Moline, will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Rapids City, Iowa. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, Ill., with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m. He died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.
He owned and operated DeSplinted Farm Implement in Port Byron for 24 years. He was also a volunteer with the Port Byron Fire Dept. for several years.
Mr. DeSplinter was born May 26, 1920, in Alba Township, Ill., the son of Frank and Blanche Hulslander DeSplinter. He married Ramona Ione Hamm in 1946 in Moline.
Bob served in the Army during World War II with the 102nd division in Germany.
He was well-known in the Quad-City area for his talent of playing the four-string banjo. He had entertained people with his banjo since he was 12 years old. He most recently was a member of the Good Ole Boys band, playing with Chuck Hartz and Harold Hansen at many area nursing and retirement homes.
He was also a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Coe-Lamb American Legion Post 421 in Port Byron.
Most of all, Bob enjoyed being with his family.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church or the Coe Lamb American Legion Post 421.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Francine DeSplinter, East Moline; daughters and son-in-law, Ronda Sue DeSplinter, Faifax, Va.; and Roxanne and Mark Johnson, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Kari, Michael, Teresa, Maura, and Bradford; and his twin sister, Reta Johnson, Sheffield, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis DeSplinter.
