10/15/1956 - 04/28/2025

Rob passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones and his doggie by his side.

Rob was born in Visalia, CA on October 15th, 1956. His family lived in Delano, CA and moved to Bakersfield when he was in the second grade. He attended Highland High School and graduated in 1975. Rob always talked about how he had fond memories growing up, visiting relatives in Morro Bay and Cayucos on family vacations. The Doty family took many memorable trips up to Lake Shasta as well, where Rob found a love for water skiing. His family had a boat that his mother, Lillian, named "The Doty Boaty".

After high school, Rob attended Bakersfield College and Fresno State. During his college years Rob worked as a seasonal fire fighter and discovered his true calling.

Rob started off his fire career working for Taft City for 2 years. He then joined Kern County Fire Department and worked the remaining 36 years of his career, ending as a much-beloved fire captain.

He met his wife, Teresa, in the summer of 1980. They were married a year later in 1981. His daughters Lauren and Megan were born in 1985 and 1988 in Bakersfield. Rob and Teri relocated the family to Tehachapi, CA in 1992. They raised their girls in the small town and enjoyed the simple country life, having many animals.

In 2003 he followed his dream of living by the beach and moved the family to the central coast.

Rob was a huge sports fan. He was very athletic and as a young adult became an expert downhill skiier, and he very much enjoyed golf. He was a die-hard Raiders fan and a season ticket holder. He carried on his love of the USC Trojans from his beloved father, Jack Doty, who was an alumni. Rob passed on his love of baseball and the Dodgers to his entire family. One of his favorite vacations was taking his family to spring training to see the Dodgers play in Arizona. One of his favorite pastimes more recently was playing golf with his two sons in law (playing for the hot dog hole), which he always won of course!

Over the years, Rob and Teri took many wonderful trips all over the world together, including multiple trips to France, where his father and uncle served in the US army during World War II . Rob and Teri were avid cruisers, traveling to places like Greenland and the Panama Canal.

Rob was blessed with 4 beautiful grandchildren, and taking care of his family meant everything to him.

Rob is survived by his wife of 44 years, Teresa, and their dog Millie , daughter Lauren Blattler (James) of Truckee, daughter Megan DeLay (Thomas) of Grover Beach, mother Lillian Doty of Guadalupe, sister Melanie Doty (Maury Cohen) of Scotts Valley, grandchildren Ella, Jack, Bennett, and Tommy as well as many nephews and cousins.

Rob was predeceased by his father, John R. "Jack" Doty in 2016.

Memorial donations in Rob's name may be made to Ridley-Tree Cancer Center in Santa Barbara.

Rob was amazed when our Fire Dept played the off season Oakland Raiders in an exhibition basketball game. We got them inebriated on purpose the night before at our Union Hall to give us a chance. My job was to keep them off balance with hard fouls. We were only down by 2 points at halftime, then Raider Todd Christian took me out!! Also, I had performed Frisbee Dog Halftimes for the Raiders, and did the USC/UCLA Game Rosebowl halftime, with front row seats! His special dog Katie was pick our litter! Golf with Rob was too much fun, "Hammer City!"

Both Rob and my careers with KCFD mirrored each others. In the early years I was a FF at Sta 42 for Captain Tommy Warren and Rob was a FF at Sta 44 for Captain Bobby Twist. Since we were on the same shift, and our captains were close friends it made life interesting. Rob and I were stationed together at 16 in Bear Valley Springs. At the time Sta 16 was a two man station. We worked together for a couple of years, probably in the late 90´s right up until he promoted to Captain. Rob was always fun to be around, with that infectious laugh I can still hear to this day. He was always easy to mess with since he was such a die hard Raider fan, even sporting that Raider emblem tattooed on his calve. Rob´s house home was located on a street behind the station looking out toward Cub Lake. During the summer around the 4th of July they would hold a hot air balloon festival. On those occasions Rob´s wife Terri would make us breakfast and we´d sit out on his front porch drinking coffee and watching them launch the hot air balloons. Good times! Rob loved his wife and daughters. He was very proud of his son in laws and grandkids. If you know Rob he was a financial planner, he was successful at it, probably learned it from his dad. Rob and I always kept in touch, and would usually share about our families. Later in life at the end of our careers, and during retirement I would vacation at a home across the street from Rob´s house in Arroyo Grande. We spent many hours enjoying the weather and catching up. Until Heaven, my old friend will be missed.

I met Rob and Teresa through palliative care and I was his nurse at home. Rob was one of the hardest fighting patients I´ve ever had. He did everything I asked him to do to give him a fighting chance, even though it was really hard to eat and function through all he had to do. He left no fight undone and "slayed the Red Dragon", a type of chemo most pts never finish, but he did! He is one of my patients I will never forget!!!

We only knew Rob for a few short years, but, wow, what an impact he made in our lives! So glad we were able to cruise with Rob and Teri to Iceland and also the East Coast. We will miss Rob´s infectious smile, competitive spirit, hilarious sense of humor, and kind heart. We will be thinking of you, Rob, when our Giants play your Dodgers and our 49ers play your Raiders! Rest in peace, Rob. So blessed that you were part of our lives.

Rob and I were comrades at SBP airport for SkyWest. He was the most wonderful pal and partner in crime. Lifted me up when I needed it, and taught me so much. He was kind, and thoughtful, and a stellar human being. The world is dimmer without him. I´m so sorry for this loss. Thinking of his beloved family.

Dear Doty family,
I am heartbroken for your loss and send my deepest condolences to you all. Rob was such a special person and touched everyone who came in contact with him. His kindness knew no boundaries and his smile was infectious. I enjoyed our friendly banter during football season over the Saints and the Raiders, especially when Drew was playing with them. He was a good neighbor and always willing to help anyone and will be missed by so many of us. Rest now in Peace dear Rob.

Heartfelt prayers for your sweet family.

Sincerely,
Lori and Dave Ruffner

Rob was my coworker and friend in the airlines at the Slo county airport. He was always positive and smiling even when flights were stressful. He was so kind and helpful to everyone. He loved his family and dogs. He talked fondly of his previous work as a firefighter. He had such a beautiful heart. Heaven gained a bright light. Sending his family so many hugs and prayers.

Rob and I had many Strike team assignments together, then worked opposite shifts at Lost Hills before he retired. He was a good friend even though he loved the Raiders. RIP brother!
