Robert DUKE

I was a student and later a colleague Neurologist of Dr. Duke in Hamilton. Every Friday we have Neurology rounds -that he started about 40 years ago. I remember his presentations vividly-he was an astute clinician, and a warm and encouraging human being. I particularly remember the day he brought his computer and showed a video-he had resisted the computer-but had triumphed! We all clapped to encourage him. He did some mock orals for me in preparing to do my specialty exams. He never seemed to be in a hurry and never minimized peoples problems. We missed him after his retirement -but still have a weekly reminder of him on Friday mornings.

We were neighbours of Robert and Alayne in Stonebury Place, Freelton. Despite his outstanding professional accomplishments, Robert was a modest and unassuming man who was always prepared to lend a helping hand. On the last occasion that I spoke with him, he described his own diagnosis with much surprise, yet commendable stoicism and bravery. Although, as a neurologist, he was fully aware of the challenges that he faced, he was still able to cherish the special moments that awaited, in tune with nature, as he walked around the neighbourhood. A peaceful soul who had mastered mindfulness and appreciated the blessings of his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Alayne and his family at this difficult time.

We are very sad to feel Bob's loss but the memories of our times together in Medicine at UBC will always be treasured. What terrible irony that a fine neurologist should succumb to such a cruel and implacable disease. We kept in touch and had wonderful memories while interning in Montreal - finding standing room places at the old Montreal Forum to watch the Habs, snowmobiling in the freezing cold in Ottawa, and putting up the Christmas lights many years at the old Burlington farm house. Honoured that Lynn and I are Godparents to Kevin, and Alayne is Godmother to our Kathleen. Bob was understated in the pride he had for Stephen, Kathy and Kevin and their careers in Medicine and Nursing. He was an exemplary physician, and I and my classmates were awed by his quiet brilliance. His sense of humour was teasing and he was quick with his comebacks - all cut short by the illness which he bore in such privacy. We will honour his memory and give thanks for his life.
