Robert Fogel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2022.
Robert M. Fogel, DO

We are saddened to announce the death of Dr. Robert M. Fogel, 87.

Dr. Fogel was a 1958 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was certified in anatomical, clinical and forensic pathology and served as Medical Examiner in Oklahoma during the "Dixie Mafia" days, performing autopsies and testifying in court cases. Bob served as an instructor in pathology at the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville College of Medicine, and at the Oklahoma College of Medicine and Surgery, while a member of the professional medical staff at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital.

Dr. Fogel's academic and administrative appointments included service as professor and chair of the Department of Pathology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to that, he was with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey College of Osteopathic Medicine, first as acting dean, then as acting associate dean for clinical affairs, finally as professor and chairman of clinical pathology. In 2009, he moved to the Island of St. Kitts where he taught pathology at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences, returning to Tulsa in retirement in 2012.

Dr. Fogel was recognized by the American College of Osteopathic Pathology with its Distinguished Service Award and the O. J. Snyder Memorial Award from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. While he was happy with those awards, he was most proud of being named Professor of the Year numerous times in every institution where he taught. His students often said he taught them to "think like doctors" when they began practicing medicine.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed golf and snow skiing. He loved to sail and was a prolific writer, both professionally and as a hobby. His favorite place to be was near water, whether the lake at his former farm in Mannford or the ocean in St. Kitts.

Dr. Fogel was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Gussie Fogel, his brother Sydney, and his son-in-law Scott Messler. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Pamela Ross-Fogel and his six children: Michelle Inforzato, Robert Fogel (Dina Mahfouz Ghobashy), Valerie Fogel Inforzato (Todd Bellamy), Karen Messler, Kimberly Greving (Daniel), and Anthony Fogel (Iris Enriquez Yepiz). He has 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We will all miss him dearly.

One of his classes gave this description: Honorable Pathologist, Noble Teacher and, most of all, Caring and Passionate Human Being." They were so right!

A celebration of Dr. Fogel's remarkable life is being planned for September 24th with details to follow. www.bixbyfuneralservice.com

Dr. Fogel will certainly be missed! He was an incredible human and teacher. I will never forget performing with him at an open mic night fundraiser I organized at PCOM. He played the clarinet and I sang "their song" in dedication to his wife. He will be missed, but never ever forgotten.

My most heart-felt condolences to Pamila and Robert's other family members.
As fellow pathologist, I was impressed by his passion to share with the members of the American Osteopathic College of Pathology, as well as the Board of Pathologists. He had a passion to share.
Rest well in the arms of Abraham, my friend.

I used to babysit for Dr Fogel when I was in high school. He was so smart. My husband, also a D.O. knew him or had him as a teacher at OSU-COMS here in Tulsa, 1975-1978. Dr Fogel was an amazing individual. He remembered me at a Christmas function several years ago. He will be missed!

Dr. Fogel was an inspiration to me when he taught me at OSU Medical School. I became a pathologist and a Forensic Pathologist in large part due to his example.
