We knew Robert from about 1985 to the end -- though we lost touch over the past couple of years, we'd exchange Christmas cards and hellos over the decades. He was full of humor and passion for the right thing. I did think that perhaps he'd succumbed to Time when we didn't hear from him last year. He was a dear friend even at a long distance and he made his mark in the world. May he rest in peace.

Robert was the first friend I made when I moved to San Diego. He later became my father-in-law. I remember flying into SD to visit Katie; he was the only guy available to pick me up at the airport as Katie and Peggy were working. He had a leather jacket on a baret, and I had army fatigues and my shaved head. We looked like a black panther and a skinhead. We immediately hit it off and went for some beers. I am glad I met him for some beers just a couple of months ago. I will miss you buddy.

I will always remember Robert's ability to find laughter in situations, to look at life directly and to balance it with humor, bawdy or light. He's probably laughing out loud now as I write this.
