Robert Goree

Family-Placed Death Notice

Robert (Bob) Wilson Goree, Aviator, Businessman, Avid Georgia Tech Man. Born August 25, 1921, he grew up in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, attended John Inman Bass Boys High and Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the freshman football team. He joined the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor, where he served as a Naval Aviator and remained an active reservist until 1955. He began flying at age twelve out of Hartsfield Airport, he loved to recall "because the air was safer than the roads in those days." His love for flying continued well into his seventies. He moved to Alexander City, Alabama where he owned several businesses, He maintained an Atlanta business presence with Rusty's Drive Inn & Chalet Restaurant on Peachtree Street from 1949 until the early 1970's. Active in the community, of Alexander City, AL, he was an early Russell Board Member, President of Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and a Kiwanis Club member. He returned to Atlanta in 2003 where his enthusiastic love of the city and Georgia Tech continues with the next generation of Gorees and friends whose lives he touched. Bob is survived by his wife, Sandie K. Goree and children, Thomas Russell Goree, Julia Goree, Elisabeth Goree and C.P. Goree, III; grandchildren, Robert Wilson Goree III, Kathryn Goree, Lee Shockley, Julia Shockley Upton, Thomas Russell Goree, Jr. Lindsey Goree, Elisabeth Goree, Alex Berry, Allison Berry and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Julia Russell Goree, parents, C.P. and Winnie Wilson Goree, brother, C.P. (Roy) Goree, sister, Ann Goree and his son, Robert Wilson Goree, Jr. The family would like to acknowledge the loving care given by nurses Lynell Coleman, Changbalata Nimeme and Dr. Monica Parker. The Memorial Services will be held in Alexander City, AL at the Russell Mausoleum at 2:00 CST, Thursday, September 6. 2007.. Visitation will follow at the Goree home immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Emory Wesley Woods Hospital Foundation. or the Georgia Tech roll call.
