Arlington - Colonel Robert "Bob" Gruenhagen, 92, passed away on January 15, 2025 surrounded by family in Arlington, Texas after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born on January 20, 1932, in Great Falls, Montana, Bob grew up in his hometown and attended Great Falls High School graduating in 1949. He enlisted in the Montana Air National Guard in 1947, where he established the first jet engine maintenance shop and was appointed Maintenance Control Officer. He was called to active duty for the Korean War with the 186th Fighter Squadron in 1951. He served stateside with SAC and TAC as well as overseas with the Icelandic Defense Force. Moving to Texas in 1966 he served with the 136th Airlift Wing and retired as a full Colonel in 1987. His commitment to service and aviation was a defining part of his life.

Bob had lifelong admiration for the P-51 Mustang aircraft where he authored a book Mustang: The Story of the P-51 Fighter published in 1969. Active in aviation organizations he worked tirelessly to maintain vintage aircraft with the Commemorative Air Force. He also volunteered in his community council committee and Meal on Wheels. These interests brought him joy and connected him with others who shared his enthusiasm.

He is survived by his daughter Susan (James) Schrade; his sister Beverly Johnston; brother-in-law Ed Law; niece Helen (Randy) Gerringa; nephew Jay Johnston, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Helen (Jaraczeski) Gruenhagen, his wife Jean Gruenhagen, and daughter Stephanie Ball.

A memorial service celebrating Bob's extraordinary life will be held on March 5th, 2025 at Moore Funeral Home Arlington, Texas with inurnment at DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. See Bobs full obituary at Dignitymemorial.com
