Robert Hayes Obituary

ROBERT ELLIOTT HAYES Robert Elliott Hayes, 74, passed from this life on May 3, 2017. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on February 7, 1943. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Mary Giffin, his father, Christopher Hayes, and his much beloved stepfather, Douglas Giffin. Survivors include his wife and best friend of 22 years, Pamela Tarler Hayes of Southport, NC; son Daniel Hayes and wife Judy of Holly Springs, NC; son Anthony Hayes and wife Kelly of Cameron, NC; grandchildren Raven, Krystal, Emily, Tyler, Brandon, and Katie; a special step-daughter, Rachel Bowman; brothers Barry Hayes and Bill Kay, and sister Anne Buzelli; the entire Tarler clan; and beloved nieces Caroline Gandy (Will) and Jennifer Poteat (Jordan). Bob was a retired Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army Special Forces, with combat service in Vietnam and many years of postings overseas in Germany and Austria. After his Army retirement, Bob finished college and earned his Master's degree in Guidance at Campbell University. Although he held various positions throughout his career, including Crime Prevention Office for Ft. Bragg and Director of the Crime Prevention Division for the State of North Carolina, none was more important or rewarding for him than his eighteen years as Child Custody Mediator for the 13th Judicial District of the State of North Carolina. Growing up in the post-WWII years with a single mother, an at-risk youth himself, Bob was devoted to the care and safety of at-risk youth in many ways throughout his lifetime, and as custody mediator he was able to better the lives of so many children. Bob's accomplishments were as multifaceted as the man himself. A talented competitive swimmer and diver, Bob was a Canadian Junior National swimming champion as a young teenager. He was naturalized as a US citizen four years after joining the US Army on his 18th birthday. He had a varied and distinguished Army career, especially as a linguist in German and Russian. Bob worked with victims all of his life, especially in rape counseling, child abuse, and troubled youth. Bob was a reputable pipe maker and woodworker, loved to sail, drink Irish whiskey and sing Irish fight songs. He was an extraordinary husband, father, and man. There was no nicer, gentler man than Bob Hayes, devoted to his family, friends, God, and country. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, May 6, 2017 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 205 E. Moore St., Southport, NC 28461. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Bob's name to St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Southport; Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422, or the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517. I had the honor of working with Bob in the Custody Mediation program for eighteen years. We were hired within a month of each other. I admired his kind demeanor, patience, big heart, and his ability to connect with people. His skills, talent and strong work ethic brought peace and understanding to thousands of parents in conflict. He was an admired friend and colleague. I am grateful we were able to tell him all of this in person when he retired last year.

His spirit was open and giving, and will live on in memories, his work legacy, and his family. I wish you peace and will hold you in my prayers.

At the 2016 TAPS pipe show I was making my second tour through the tables and happened on a slack time at Bob Hayes' table that had been previously crowded. I was admiring what remained of his stock of pipes, when he looked at me seriously and mentioned a price I could hardly believe, about a third what I would have expected to pay for the pipe I was looking at. I kind of choked, and thought maybe I had misheard him, and quietly repeated the price, and he confirmed. I told him he'd made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I'd looked at his pipes and commented on their artistry the previous year as well, and I feel he was acknowledging my appreciation, which he was able to do because he'd had a good show. I thought that was an extremely kind gesture, and I wish I had been better able to express my appreciation, but I think I was sort of dazed by amazement. The pipe is a beauty, a bamboo shank straight rusticated Dublin. Bob Hayes was a great guy, and a great pipe carver.

Dear Hayes Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Bob touched the lives of many people. I had the fortunate of getting to know him in our role as custody mediators. He always offered great insight and encouragement, and brought a sense of calm, kindness, wisdom and humor to the table! In our work, people trusted him, colleagues and clients alike.

Bob also enjoyed talking about how much he loved and treasured his family, which made him all the more endearing to me. I'm truly honored to have known this great man. We are all thinking of you during this time of sorrow.

Bob was a wonderful man who I admired as a colleague. His patience and negotiation skills were qualities that I strived to mirror in my own practice. I will cherish the opportunities I've had to talk with him and his advice over the years has been very much appreciated. My heart goes out to Bob's loved ones. A great man has been called home.

So sad that Bob was looking so forward to his retirement and died so soon afterwards. Bob was a gentleman and a good friend who always had a good word for everyone and a good sense of humor that was never absent. He did the 13th Judicial District a wonderful job as Custody Mediator and we, attorneys, were blessed to have known him and to have had him resolve and assist in some of the most important decisions in the lives of young children. It is with sadness that I say good-bye to Bob Hayes, who I always kidded about being the World's Fastest Human, but with joy that I know he is at rest without suffering and enjoying life in his new body and probably looking around the Heavenly Gates to find someone to help. My condolences to the family in this loss, but your loss is Heaven's gain. Rest in Peace, my friend, and congratulations on a Life and Job well done. William W.
