May God Bless the Hughes family. Coach Hughes, you will always be remembered for all the hard work and achievements and awards that you accomplished. You will truly be missed, but not forgotten. You inspired us so much that nothing was impossible if we never gave up. We held on to those dreams. How could I forget? You were our mentor. I always will remember you and my classmates and my neighbors and my community. You kept dreams alive. God bless you. May you rest in peace.

I met the honorable coach Robert Hughes in Longview, Texas at a Christmas Basketball Tournament. My name is Bobby White.

I played for him at I M Terrell a freshman 1973

I remember him, he and my father were first cousins, family nickname "Foofie", lol. He will be missed - now it's just his only sister ,Erma Jean.

The love of friends and family carry you through your grief. May God comfort you .

I met Coach Hughes when my son was a sophomore in high school all though my son didn´t attend Dunbar High, Coach Hughes still had an impact on my son and would often have talks with him. Because of his encouragement my son stayed on the right track and he is also teaching and coaching and making a difference like Coach Hughes. My condolences and prayers are with this family and Coach Hughes will be missed by many. R.I.P Coach you have earned your WINGS

A man with Intergrity and Class

Wow! I was shocked and saddened to learn that Coach R. Hughes had departed to a better life after 96 years on Earth, but simultaneously contemplating the great time all of us shared as wildcats at P.L. Dunbar in the 80s and 90s.
When Coach Hughes resigned from coaching in FW, the "glory" truly departed and sports, competition, and the liveliness of the City of FW died with him. When he resigned from coaching altogether, all of the ambitious fans moved away from the city and flocked to the suburbs, and now that's where the competition lives. When Coach Hughes resigned from coaching all of the long lines of fans who once encircled Wilkerson Greines awaiting tickets to see "the greatest show in town" also ceased and so did the money. I remember how intimidated I was as a female basketball player because I knew, on certain days during practice, Coach Hughes, Coach Criss, and Coach Terrell were going to make us females work like "Hebrew" slaves as we competed on the court against the male athletes and I always dreaded it. Not only were the basketball games lively, but so were the crazy pep rallies that we had every Friday before the football and sometimes the basketball games. The entire Dunbar Community had so much to look forward to...even academically.
So, to the Hughes Family and the Wildcat Family, hang on to the memories because while the "glory" has departed from our community, it hasn't departed from our hearts! Live on Wildcats! D. Dunlap, Class of 1984

I remember Coach always walking getting his exercise in I tried walking with him a couple of times around the neighborhood I am 5"2 he said talk to you later good seeing you. If you missed an assignment in practice, coach tap u on the but with his pattle.Breaking up a crap game,coach would sneak up on the game every one would run and leave the money. Coach would pick up the money and smile, and say ,I got lunch money. What a great human .
