Robert Kunz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 19 to Feb. 21, 2023.
Robert Davis Kunz began his life on October 11, 1931 in Mason City, Iowa to parents Iola Steiner and Edmund Kunz. He departed for Heaven on February 14, 2023 at the age of 91. Robert (Bob) enjoyed a long, fulfilling life, which included living on a farm, serving in the United States Air Force, working his second career with the United States Postal Service, and enjoying a fabulous retirement. He was married to Lorraine Bragg Kunz for 60 years until her death in 2017. They raised two daughters, Melanie Meeks and Melissa Lewis. Bob traveled all over the world with the Air Force and piloted F-86 fighter jets in post-war Korea. He earned his NAA Mach Buster pin for breaking the speed of sound. Later he was a B-52 pilot and flew missions over Vietnam. He served at multiple bases across the United States until he landed at Barksdale AFB. He continued his career in the USAF as a flight instructor until he retired in 1972 and then went on to fly commercial flights for Royale Airlines. After a long life of flying, he began a second career with the post office until he retired again in 2013. From then on, he enjoyed spending time with family, reading, and working out. He was an avid gun enthusiast and competed with IDPA for many years. The twenty years he spent with his grandson brought him joy. He loved the annual family vacations at the beach where he could get a couple dozen raw oysters and a cold beer. Even when he was unable to remember if he ate breakfast in the morning, he could always remember staying at Sailfish on Dauphin Island. He was the life of the party playing charades. Robert is preceded in death by his spouse, his parents, brother Jack, and sister Joanne. He is survived by two daughters, Melanie Meeks and Melissa Lewis, son-in-law William AJ Lewis III (Billy); and grandchildren Catherine Ward, Caroline Lewis, and William AJ Lewis IV (Jack); and great-grandchildren Hunter Ward, Hannah Ward, and Stella Ward; brother Jerry and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Willis Knighton North and Willis Knighton Pierremont, the staff and volunteers at The Carpenter House, Jeremy and the team at Companion Home Services, Dr. Richard Haynie, Dr. Robert Martin at Pierremont Cardiology for over twenty years of care, Noah Bunnell, Madeline Webb, and all of the friends who checked in on Papa over the years. Night night, Papa. He lived his life as a hero who was dedicated to service. In death, he continued this service by donating his body for medical research at LSUHS. He was a quiet man and a private man. If you would like to contribute as a memorial, please consider K9sforwarriors.org or the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana.

Melanie and Melissa, it is a bit late to send you both my sincere condolences on the death of your dad. I just heard about his passing a few weeks ago, as I lived away for over five years. Your dad was a great man and I know he is at peace.

Your Papa was such a sweet, funny man. The times that Ricky and I met him at Sailfish at Dauphin Island, he always made us feel welcomed and part of the family. My heart goes out to the family. Hugs to you all.
