Robert Mahon

Robert "Bob" Joseph Mahon passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at his home in Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey.

Bob was a devoted husband to his wife, Eileen (Flatley), and a loving father to his five sons. He is survived by his children: Robert (Adrienne) of Avon, Thomas (Kathy) of Shark River Hills, Terence (Andrea) of Avon, and Michael (Garrett Reynolds) of Little Silver. He was predeceased by his son Jeffrey in 1980. Bob is also survived by his sisters, Marianne Caringi and Dorothy Melnykevich, both of Avon. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna (1986) and Michael (1989), as well as his brother Michael (1987).

Bob was a proud grandfather to fourteen grandchildren: Ashley Baffa (Matthew), Alyssa Wall (Nick), Kaela Outhouse (Jesse), Kristi Dayback (Thomas), Thomas Mahon (Katelyn), Amanda Duffy (Brendan), Kerry Mahon, Ryan Mahon (Morgan), Jeffrey Mahon, Terence Mahon, Bobby Mahon, Michael Mahon, Kathryn Mahon, and Joseph Mahon. He also leaves behind twelve great-grandchildren.

Born in Bayonne, Bob was the second of four children. He graduated from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City in 1953 before attending St. Peter's College. He later earned a degree in English from Seton Hall University. His career in education spanned decades, culminating in his role as Superintendent of Ocean Township Schools, a position he proudly held for sixteen years-the longest tenure to date.

Beyond education, Bob held numerous jobs, including truck driver, security guard, bartender, and business owner. After retiring from Ocean Township, he worked for the state of New Jersey as Director of Local Budget Review and served as an interim Superintendent across the state.

A dedicated public servant, Bob served Avon-by-the-Sea for over forty years on the planning board and board of commissioners. He was Mayor in 2003 and again from 2007 to 2015. In recognition of his contributions, December 11th was declared "Robert Mahon Day" throughout Monmouth County.

Bob was an active member of St. Elizabeth's Parish in Avon, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and lector. He took pride in his Irish heritage and participated in the Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade. Known as "Big Bob," he was larger than life to those who knew him. He enjoyed running, tennis, boardwalk strolls, and Sunday mornings on his porch overlooking the river with family.

Visitation will be held at St. Elizabeth's Church on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the care of Riley Bonner Funeral Home.
