Robert McDougall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2005.
Robert Douglas McDougall Robert Douglas McDougall, 61, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, after a long battle with multiple myeloma, surrounded by loving family and friends. Robert was born May 20, 1944 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, where he and his family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before immigrating to Utah in 1970. Robert was preceded in death by his mother Bettie Lenore McDougall in 2003. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his father Douglas, his brother Wayne, his sister Dianne (Ross) Egbert, his five children Leland (Brad) Harman, Mia Carsey, Jared (Stephanie), Joshua (Lynae), and Ashleigh, his two step-children Debra Hooley and Dorsey (Angela) Hooley, and 13 grandchildren. Robert was a graduate of Brigham Young University. He worked as the managing editor of the Provo Daily Herald from 1974-1988. He then worked as managing editor of Howard RuffÕs Ruff Times publications, then as vice-president of Jefferson Institute and marketing manager of Liberty Mint and Great Western Mint, then as a freelance writer and mortgage banker. Robert was a prolific writer, writing thousands of articles and editorials for the Daily Herald, creating thousands of pieces of direct mail that sold millions of dollars worth of products and services, and penning many books for himself and others. Robert is perhaps best known for his rousing pieces in the Daily Herald, which spurred such community action as the reopening of Geneva Steel and the development of the river walk between the Utah and Great Salt Lakes. Robert had been sick for many years, and almost incapacited the last three years of his life, lovingly cared for by his beloved Carol and his two step-children Debra and Dorsey, as well as his ward. Robert was a member of the Edgemont 13th Ward, Edgemont North Stake in Sherwood Hills, Provo, where he served for several years as a gospel doctrine and High Priest Group teacher. He also served in many LDS ward bishoprics and on many LDS high councils throughout his lifetime. Robert loved life, the gospel and LDS Church, photography, nature, his family, and his life-long friends, with whom he always stayed in touch. He spent most of his free time writing books aimed at helping LDS Church members better understand the beauty and glory of the restored gospel and Church, before succumbing. The family wishes to thank Dr. Rebecca Tanner, Dr. Brian Tudor and staff at the Central Utah Oncology Clinic, Dr. Doug Scow, and the University of Utah Bone Marrow Transplant Center. The viewing will take place Sunday, July 31 from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center, Provo. The funeral will take place Monday, August 1 at 11a.m. in the Sherwood Hills Chapel, 4000 N. Foothill Dr., Provo. There will also be a viewing one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be at East Lawn Cemetary in Edgemont, Provo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation at multiplemyeloma.org. Remembrances may be emailed to the family at [email protected].

My late husband, Meb Anderson, worked at The Daily Herald for many years with Robert. I am saddened to know that Robert has had such a difficult disease to deal with. Please accept my sincere condolence.

It took my breath away to hear the news of Robert's passing. As I write, I start to jot melancoly words and think of the many and long conversations I've had with Rob and recall how every one was interjected with laughter. Rob was a good friend, confidant, excellent person to have working for my company -- right hand is not descriptive enough -- and a fun yet thought-provoking person to be around. I once joked that we'd put on his marker "He lies Robert -- didn't smoke, drink or use profound language." He said, "It should say, "I told you I was sick!" I wish I could have been there for the funeral to help recall all the good times of Robert Mcdougall. My best to Carol.
