Robert MONTAGUE Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Aug. 19, 2015.
MONTAGUE, Robert (Bob) Joseph
Born January 23, 1944
The Montague family is deeply saddened to announce the death of their dear brother Bob who died peacefully at the Heart Institute on Sunday, August 16, 2015. Bob was a true Renaissance man, balancing his professional life with many talents. He was a prominent family lawyer in the City of Ottawa for over 40 years, being a proud partner with the Cooligan Ryan McNeely Montague law firm. Bob was an accomplished artist with his artwork reflecting his love of his Maritime roots, the Gatineau Hills and Ottawa. His athleticism showed in his skiing, running, hiking and biking in the Ottawa and Gatineau area. He had many wonderful canoe and camping trips in the Gatineau and Algonquin Park. His passion for sports was huge (especially baseball) and this provided him with great entertainment throughout the years and right to the end. Although he loved his 'home turf' he literally travelled the world. True to style, he travelled with a backpack and in luxury (on the Queen Mary). Being a skilled raconteur, his presence was felt at all gatherings. Bob's true legacy lies in the constant love and devotion he showed his family and friends. He will be so missed by his loving wife Judy and daughters Elizabeth and Erika; his sister Cathy (Loren) Houldson; his brother John (Barbara) Montague; his brother Peter (Shirley) Montague; his sister Pat (Rico) Addelman; his brother-in-law David Doyle. Bob was predeceased by his parents John and Frances Montague; brother Hugh (Barbara) Montague; twin sister Beth (David) Doyle and sister-in-law Nina Discombe. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews (and grandnieces and nephews) of whom he was so proud, always following their lives with a keen interest. Bob had many friends to whom he was true and fiercely loyal. Bob's love of life, family and friends will be missed by all who loved him.

My condolences and sympathies to Bob's family. I was a family law client of his during my divorce. He came highly recommended by friends who were family law lawyers. I would echo all of the tributes which I have read here. He was superbly intelligent, incredibly knowledgeable of the law, calm, with incredible integrity and very respectful of clients, at what is a very difficult time for them. He never developed an adversarial stance with clients and was always respectful of their lives, their feelings and their bank accounts. He leaves many legacies with one being how to practice family law with all the above qualities and values. There should be a course in all Canadian law schools on how to practice law with all of the above values and ethics; how not to stress out your clients and how to treat them with respect which was superbly carried out by Bob in his practice.

Hearing of Bob's passing was deeply saddening. Having worked for Cooligan Ryan 36 years ago, it was my opportunity to experience his wonderful personality, tremendous ability and integrity. Please accept my condolences for your loss and the loss for all who knew him.

I had the privilege of being mentored by Bob for the last 10 years he practiced family law. He taught me so much on so many levels and I am so proud to say I was his student. He practiced law and lived life as a true gentleman and had the respect of many, including myself. I am grateful to have called Bob a friend. My condolences to his family. With love,

Bob Montague is one of the finest persons I have ever known. He truly was a renaissance man; a dedicated father, husband, brother, son, artist, lawyer, athlete and friend all wrapped up with a wicked sense of humour, a joy for life, and a love for a well planned prank.

I will miss him terribly. Godspeed my friend; I love you, Steve

Dear Judy, we are very saddened with this news. Bob gave the LF2 Board great calming effect, and unique perspectives that helped us make informed decisions. We missed him after he left the Board, and we'll miss him even more, knowing we will no longer have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful person. Emily on behalf of the LF2 Board

Bob was a dear friend and lawyer to our family for many years. It was always fun catching up with him whenever, wherever. Hearing of his illness over the past year and how he was coping testified to his stamina and integrity. My condolences to all the family knowing that we have all lost a strong spirit.

Can't believe Bob has died. He was a brilliant lawyer and made our lives through divorce as perfect as they could have been. He was always an advocate for children and made sure both parents were involved. He will be so missed. What great guy. Our deepest sympathies to the family.

Cannot believe Bob has died. He was one of the best family lawyers ever. Totally professional and dedicated to the best interests of children. He was respected by all who knew and worked with him, including the judiciary in front of whom he argued. We will never forget his wisdom and sympathy in dealing with our case. What a loss, but what a gift he was to logic and reason in dealing with family law. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family. Much love.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob's wife Judy and daughters Elizabeth and Erika, and to our Montague cousins and their families at this difficult time. It is a great shame that Bob did not have many more years to share with all of you, to enjoy his retirement, and to add to his portfolio of wonderful paintings.

I am sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Like Jill, I too remember fun times on Aylmer Ave. and Carlyle Ave. with the Montague, Frodsham and Stevens families - and another street in the neighbourhood where the Montague family lived - was it Hopewell or Sunnyside? I did not know that Beth and Hugh had passed away. As Jill said; good memories. RIP.

My sympathies to you and yours. I have not seen Bobby personally over the years, but have kept track of him, and was shocked yesterday at this sad news. Lots of good memories of all the Montagues and the fun we had as kids on Aylmer Avenue. I did get sort of caught up on all of you when Pat Nichol Addelman was home for the Hopewell School reunion at David Millett's home in Carleton Place - I drove her back to Ottawa to meet her family at the Golden Palace - that would be Patsy - we had a really nice visit. Again, my sympathy.....good memories!
