Robert Montgomery

Robert Charles Montgomery, 71, passed away suddenly from pneumonia on January 22, 2025. He was a longtime resident of Durham, North Carolina.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Bob was the son of Robert S. and Mary Ann Montgomery. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and earned a scholarship to attend Mt. Hermon School for Boys (now Northfield Mount Hermon School) in Gill, Massachusetts. He credited his time there with shaping his critical thinking and resilience. Bob went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Following graduation, he worked as a technician in the Cancer Biology Section of the Washington University School of Medicine. In 1978, after receiving his Master's Degree in Health Administration from Duke University, Bob joined the Humana Hospital Administrative Specialist Program. Over the years, he advanced within Humana, taking on roles in Spartanburg, South Carolina; Las Vegas, Nevada; Tacoma, Washington; and Jacksonville, Florida. Eventually, he returned to North Carolina to work in health insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.

Bob had a passion for gadgetry, travel, and perfecting his Spanish language skills. He first visited Cancun, Mexico, when it was an emerging destination and continued to return over the years. His travels extended beyond Cancun to Belize, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, and Spain, where he appreciated the nuances of the Spanish language in each region. He was known for his quick wit and zest for life and especially enjoyed sharing fresh shrimp ceviche with friends on a Cancun beach.

Bob is survived by his sister, Carol Sherick, and her husband, Mike, of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His ex-wife, Mary Ann Montgomery, predeceased him.

Bob's final resting place will be in the Dicken/Breedlove/Smith family plot at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. Unfortunately the originally scheduled burial date of April 16, 2025, is postponed until further notice.
