Dear Rita,
I recently came across Bob's obituary on the Internet. We were saddened by the news and that we couldn't have known about it in time to be with you before he died and after. But we have been heartened by recalling our special times with Bob and you. They are as real now as they were across the twenty years in which they happened. They began when you both came to the Oak Park Library to join our discussion of two Hemingway short stories, including “A Clean Well-Lighted Place,” which Bob went on to produce as a prize-winning film. Our friendship and collaboration grew across the intervening years. Bob's humility, his greatest virtue, generated curiosity, humor, warmth, candor, diplomacy, passion, drive--and the achievements to which these gifts of his character all led. I am grateful for the last time I talked to you both when you were in Evanston. Bob was lucid, energetic and friendly as ever. That will be how I remember him. Beyond the memories he left family and friends are his legacy to all who prize good writing, great literature and the best of civilization. We are blessed that you, who have been inseparable from his life and work, are with us.
Love,
Redd

Dear Rita:
Our condolences to you and your family on the passing of Bob. We knew you as a couple only through our walks with our dog and our infrequent conversations. We were saddened to read about Bob's death. We viewed you as a model we could replicate for successful aging!

I had the priviledge of working next door to Mr. Morton and we would sometimes sit and he would lavish me with wonderful tales of yesteryear! He was an awesome gentleman and I am sure you will miss him as well as I.
