It was so moving to see all the pictures. I got to know Bob only very recently but I did enjoy the time that I spent with him and Laurie even though the last time that I saw him was on a occasion of so much sadness. Thank you for putting this together, Laurie! (Sorry I can't get used to calling you "Laura"!)
Love, Liz

I was one of Bobs friends in high school. He went to Central Catholic and I went to St. Rose Academy both located in Vincennes, IN. He was always a quiet yet polite young man. We had our 50th anniversary of our high school graduation last year in September 2014. Alot of us showed up but then there were some that didn't make it, Bob was one of them. You have my deepest sympathy and I will think of you often. Love to you and all your family.

I will miss you. You were the cool fraternity guy who was also my nice cousin. I looked forward to seeing you or hearing about you when we visited Aunt Ursie and Uncle Topper. You introduced me to nice rocks, although I preferred mine faceted. I will miss calling you to ask some science question which would wander into different topics. I'll travel the galaxies with you when my time comes.

I started babysitting Bob when he was little. I would give him a bath in the kitchen sink. He splashed so much that I was soaked. With no AC, I always promised him a treat afterwards. He enjoyed being pulled in the wagon then and we would sit under shade trees to eat our ice cream. My favorite nephew with so many wonderful memories. I will see you and my sister Ursulina at our next family reunion in heaven.

Mr. Nierste was also my science teacher. And although it's been 20+ years I find myself telling my kids about stories from his classroom. He was a great teacher and a great example to his students. He even had a way of curing even the worst case of the hiccups!

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Nierste family. I have such fond memories of the years teaching 8th grade science at Hendrick Middle School with Bob. I regret that we had lost touch over the past few years. Chaz, Bob and I all shared the geology bond. I picture him now at the big outcrop in the sky. I hope all your happy memories of Bob comfort and console you all.

Mr. Nierste is responsible for instilling a love of science and specifically geology in me. His class was my favorite and most memorable. I looked him up because my I received a copy of my very first published work today -- I had an essay published in a book -- and I quoted him and wanted to send him a copy. He used to tell us, "Knowledge of a thing engenders a love for it." It's been 22 years since I sat in his classroom, and I still love that quote, along with, "The more you know, the more you know you don't know."
Thank you, Mr. Nierste, for making a difference in my life. I'm so sad to hear of your passing. The world has lost an amazing man.
