Robert Payne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2017.
Robert "Bob" Dale Payne, 76, of South Charleston passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017 at CAMC Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 19, 1941, in Sissonville to the late Lital and Gatha (Parsons) Payne. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959, and was awarded an honorable discharge due to an injury during active duty. He was a disabled veteran, but never let that hinder him. He married in 1962, moved to South Charleston and raised 4 daughters. He later remarried in 2006 to Carol Jones and became a stepfather to Erin Jones. He was employed at Dodson Brothers Exterminating for 17 years as an exterminator, and later became a crew supervisor for Alford Swimming Pools for 15 years before taking an early retirement due to his health. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather, and enjoyed camping and fishing over the years with his family and friends. He had a warm smile, a great sense of humor, never met a stranger, and a willingness to always help others. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Sue Payne. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Carol June Payne; daughters, Teresa DeFrehn, Lisa (Joe) Russell, Lori (Brian) Payne, and Carrie (Jack) Creasey; brothers Leroy, Ray (Jean), Jack (Sue), and John (Nancy); sisters, Doris Tomlinson, Donna (Hobe) Hamon, Evelyn Foulds, and Janice (John) Hamon; grandchildren, Erikah (Billy) DeFrehn, Britani (Wayde) Westfall, Amanda (Anthony) DeFrehn, McKenzie Pauley, Kaitlin (Lemar) DeFrehn, Tiffani (Trent) Russell, Mallory (Ryan) Lutens, Nathan "Drew" Wilson, Bailey Chandler, Isaiah and Chloe Creasey , 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and family members. A service to honor the life of Bob will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, October 25, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston with Pastor Doris Walls officiating. Burial will be in Donel C Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar. Family and friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 24, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517 or https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/. Bob was our wonderful Son-in-Law, and we have precious memories of his visits here in Kennesaw and Acworth, Georgia, every year along with Carol and Erin. Our hearts are broken that Bob has left on a journey to live with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Bob was so easy to get along with, a blessing to be in our family, and a great husband to Carol, and father to Erin.

I'm so sorry to hear about Uncle Bob's passing, my heart hurts for you all, there's nothing worse than losing a parent. Just remember all the good times and memories we all have together growing up together and all the fun we had. I wouldn't trade a single second of it for nothing! Love and miss you all. Your in my thoughts and prayers.

We're so sorry for your loss...Bob was always so willing to help anyone who needed it, and accomplished more with one arm than most people do with two. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Our prayers are with his family.
