Robert Sallies Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2024.
Robert "Bob" Campbell Sallies, 92, died Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in Meredith, NH.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 10, 1931, the son of Mabel Tilton Sallies and Dorritt Sallies. He was from a New England family. His parents were returning from a driving trip across the USA and stayed several years in Cleveland. He grew up in NH at the Weirs in Laconia.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margie Garrison Sallies; daughter, E. Elizabeth Sallies, of Falls Church, VA; sister-in-law, JoAnn Bolt Garrison, of Anderson, SC; a large number of nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, great-grand-nieces and nephews, and one great-great grand-niece.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mabel and Dorritt Sallies; six brothers: D. Charles Sallies, Richard M. Sallies, Philip Sallies, David R. Sallies, Kenneth A. Sallies, and Donald O. Sallies; nephews David M. Sallies and Scott T. Sallies; nieces Linda Sallies Clements and Jodi Sallies Hart; and beloved uncles, Ralph S. Osgood and Mant O. Sallies.

Robert, better known as Bob, graduated from Laconia High School and the University of NH and held graduate degrees in Divinity and Sacred Theology and a doctorate degree in Church Management from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Newton Center, MA.

Bob served as student minister for the Nottingham, NH, Community Church and later at the South Paris, Maine, Universalist Church and the Bryant Pond, Maine, Universalist Church as a licensed minister of the Maine Universalist Convention.

After completing his graduate work, he was ordained and installed as minister of the Westbrook, Maine, Unitarian-Universalist Church. He loved the people and always kept in touch once he became Northeast District Director for several terms.

Bob served as an active member on the Maine Council of Churches. He was a trustee of the Unitarian Universalist Association and served as a financial officer and treasurer for eight years in Boston, MA. He worked with the UU Service Committee and the Religious Education Committee at conferences at Ferry Beach, Maine.

Bob became owner and publisher of the Advertiser-Democrat newspaper and printing company in the late 1950s. The business was owned by his family from the early 1880s and was sold to James Enterprises in 1976.

During his years of full-time residence in Norway, he served on the Norway School Board and the Planning Board, and as moderator of town meetings. He was a former president of the Weary Club and a member of Friends of Norway Library.

"Uncle Bob" to over 100 young family members, he and his wife Margie loved children, and their home at Round Pond was filled with them every summer. They also had a number of dogs and cats, from which they drew great pleasure.

Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Our love and appreciation for his life continues.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the South Paris, Maine, Universalist Church. A reception in the church vestry will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the South Paris Universalist Church, 36 Pine Street, South Paris, Maine 04281.

The Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home of Laconia, NH, and the Chandler Funeral Home of South Paris, ME, will handle the funeral arrangements.

Uncle bob and I used to always build things together, from making night stands to whole porches in Meredith. He always told me that If you could build something with your hand than you could do anything. I never understood as a child but now that I´m an adult I am truly thankful to have had him be a part of my life

I worked with Bob for many years at the UUA when he was the Treasurer and VP for Finance. Bob was a person of the utmost integrity who was held in the highest esteem by his employees. He was a shy man but nonetheless devoted fiercely to our religious movement. He was also an avid consumer of Diet Tab and he had a dry Maine sense he'd humor. I mourn his be loss with Margie, his family and his many friends.
