ROBERT SARGENT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2024.
Bob Sargent, longtime educator and coach, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was a man of integrity who was exceptionally devoted and committed to his family; a beloved son; a cherished father; and a faithful friend. Bob had a unique style and his own way of looking at life. He was warm, sympathetic and at all times true to himself. Good natured teasing and a twinkle in his eyes confirmed his affection for you. Bob always enquired how you were doing and listened with interest. During the good times, the challenges, the life-changing events ... the routines and the surprises, Bob was there for "his people" - ready to see each person through the best and worst of times. Bob was quick to remind us how wonderful life is; his energy and care nourished us. Being with Bob meant spending time with a best friend - talking, reminiscing, playing - grateful for the joys of life.

The first child of Owen and Catherine (née Miller) Sargent, Bob was born in Albany, California, and grew up in nearby Richmond with his younger brother, Dwain. Bob's love of athletics and the outdoors flourished in his youth and laid the foundation for his self-esteem, social development and life views. He played multiple sports and enjoyed high altitude camping trips.

At San Francisco State University, Bob was a leader on the varsity tennis team and he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees before serving in the U.S. Army National Guard and pursuing a teaching career; first at San Francisco's Pelton Junior High School and then at Redwood High School in Larkspur. He taught physical education, science, math, and driver training. A colleague wondered "how Bob could go out in cars with novice drivers then into the classroom with the challenge of engaging teens...he was a master of both." Bob was passionate about teaching; always prodding his students to think and learn. While teaching, Bob coached RHS Giants football and basketball teams for several years, and then the golf team for three decades until his retirement in 2000.

Family meant everything to Bob. He planned and delivered annual family adventures around the US. He was a devoted fan at his children's many school and sport events, while winning many regional tennis tournaments himself. Talking sports was one of his favorite pastimes, second only to time with his family. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Karen; sons, Ross (Heather and children Matthew and Michael); Ryan (children Noah, Kamryn, and Chloe); their mother, Alice Burbage; his stepson, Shawn Bryant and stepdaughter, Marla Ross. Bob's legacy lives on in his adoring family, his many friends, and thousands of his former students.

A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at Novato United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial in Bob's honor to the American Heart Association or the Novato United Methodist Church.

Bob was my biology teacher and golf coach at Redwood High School. Just a great guy... a great coach! He was always so committed to his teaching and coaching. I always enjoyed playing for him and being in his company. He had a great sense of humor. Time flies and I haven't seen him since the mid '80's, but it was still a shock to hear of his passing. I'll always have great memories of our golf teams and tournaments. Thank you for your care in both your teaching and coaching. You'll be missed!

I met Bob in 1961 when I was 18 and started dating his best friend in college, Easy Abers. Bob has been a loyal, and supportive friend all of theses years. He was there for us through my husband's illness and death in 2004, and he remained a good friend to me ever since. I cherished Bob's friendship, and I will miss him.

Dear Family,

We miss our dear neighbor, Bob, who lived directly across the street from us. We saw him come and go with his family and could always count on a wave and a smile. I can still see him waiting by the curb for his golf buddies to pick him up. Also, we teased him about possibly hitting golf balls through our front window. He never did.
Recently, when Bob was not feeling well, I saw him sitting in his open front doorway with Ross and Bob waved with a smile and I will remember that.

Blessings to his dear family.

I miss watching Bob practicing his golf swing in the front yard--he always called out "hello" and asked how I was doing. He was a good and kind man, and I am so grateful to have had him as a neighbor. He is greatly missed, but what a great life he had! prayers for all of Bob´s family
