Robert Allen "Bob" Surber NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. Robert Allen "Bob" Surber, age 76, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, Nov. 1, 2010, at his home. Born July 27, 1934, at Richlands, Va., he was the second son of the late James and Nell Peery Surber. Bob worked for 39 years for the Virginia Department of Highways. He was an inspector for the roads overseeing the building of Interstate 81 between Marion and Wytheville. In 1964, he became the assistant resident engineer for Tazewell and Bland counties. He later became the resident engineer for these counties. All of his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. With this passion, he served many years on the board of the Brumley Cove Camp of the Lebanon Baptist Association. A favorite ministry of his was working with young people. He always had a piece of candy, a dollar, or a joke for any child he encountered. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Patsy Surber and Hess Surber. Survivors include his wife, Betty Boswell Surber; one son, Robert Allen Surber Jr. and wife, Thelma of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter, Debi Campbell and husband, Ted of Lebanon, Va.; two brothers, Ken Surber of Castlewood, Va., and William George Surber of Chester, Va.; one sister, Carol Stilwell and husband, Curtis of Chester, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Allen Pearce and the Rev. J.C. Steele officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Brian Allison, Perry Allison Jr., Tim Noel, Billy Ruble, Grat Atkinson, and Scott Bourne. Honorary pallbearers are Perry Allison Sr., Mark Allison, Jimmy Billips, and Bill Harold. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010.
