Robert Sylar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2017.
Robert "Bob" Houston Sylar, Sr. (also known as Tooney or Bob or Dad) a lifelong
Chattanooga resident, died on November 26, 2017. He was born to the late Bert Lee
and Eola May Jolley Sylar Bob battled kidney disease for 27 years.
Bob went to McCallie School and received a Bachelor's degree from University of
Chattanooga. Bob worked at Provident Life Insurance Company
for 30 years, but was an antique dealer at heart. Bob's life-long hobby was learning about
the antiques he sold, refinishing furniture, and meeting people at Flea Markets in the South East.
Bob served in the United States Air Force four years.
Humor was a trait that best described Bob Sylar. Always one to tell a joke, his dry wit was
appreciated by anyone who met him. Bob would challenge you to name a subject and he could
tell a joke about it.

Bob is preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia L. Pack (1995) of Spring City, Tennessee.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Jane Sylar of Ooltewah Tennessee,
daughter Sherry Sylar and her spouse Roxanne Adams of New York,
son Robert H. Sylar Jr. and his spouse Amie Sylar of Chattanooga,
grandson Patrick Robert Sylar of Chattanooga,
sisters Betty Stocker and Ethelwyn Arnold,
nephews Mike Stocker, Tim and Peter Arnold,
nieces Susan Stocker, Wendy Arnold all of Chattanooga,
and 10 step grandchildren.

There will be celebration of his life at a later date.

Memorial donations can be made to: The Jewish Community Center of Chattanooga

Bob would best be remembered as kind, loving, generous and funny.
We all wish we could hear one more joke…..

I worked in the same vicinity with Bob at Provident for several years. He was pleasant, funny, and a joy to be around. I still think of him often, and I know you will miss him.

We never met Robert Sylar but knowing his daughter Sherry we can only imagine he was a sweet and gentle man. She spoke of his kindness to homeless women, he seemed so incredibly sensitive and thoughtful. Those who know him will mourn but the angels will dance to have him in their mists.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob and Pat Sylar in the summer of 1993 when they stopped in Oakland California on a cross country trip. He and Pat stayed in our tiny little bungalow with Sherry, Roxanne, my spouse Jolee and our 10 week old Jack Russell Terrier ( or terror). One on my very fond memories of that visit was when Bob was holding the puppy with her wiggly little body off the ground saying "oh nooooo, oh noooooo" very calmly as she tried to nip any part of him she could. His gentle and humorous way with her was just beautiful. We still laugh about that day whenever we talk about Bob!
Bob was a wonderful loving father to Sherry and Rocky. He was incredibly supportive and a huge presence in his kids lives. He gave his love completely and unconditionally. He was Sherry's best friend and confidant and he will be hugely missed by all of us fortunate enough to have spent time with him, a few days or a life time. He was s shining star and truly a good man. He will be profoundly missed.

To Sherry, Rocky, Mary Jane and the rest of your family - John and I will miss Bob and will always remember his wonderful humor and love of life. There was always a joke in my in-box every day after the advent of email. He and Pat were the first antique dealers to rent a booth in our mall when we opened in 1987. It was the very first booth you saw when you walked in the mall - we were proud of that, since they were first rate antique dealers and were instrumental in getting us into the business. And, I remember the day some years later when he showed up at the mall with this cute little black haired doll on his arm, grinning from ear to ear. It wasn't long after that that we attended their wedding. We will miss him - John knew him for about 50 years and I knew him for about 40. We love all of you. Carol and John

To Sherry, Rocky, and all of "Tooney's" family.......my thoughts and prayers are with you all as you experience the loss of your precious dad, uncle, grandfather, and dear friend. He was absolutely my favorite dad of all my friends, and I was so lucky to have been blessed to know him through my dear friend Sherry. Such wonderful memories flood back of being in their home and getting to know Tooney and be entertained and taught by him. And although I was unfortunate in not being around him for quite some time, I'll always have those warm memories of him. What a great man!
