Robert Tan Ang, M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2025.
Dr. Robert Tan Ang, M.D., dedicated neurologist, devoted husband, and beloved father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Sacramento, California. He was 93.

Born on January 21, 1932, in the Philippines, Robert grew up in Davao City, Mindanao, in the Philippines.

During World War II, Robert witnessed the ravages of war as a young child in the Pacific. Determined to survive and forged with stamina and independence, once the war ended, he became a diligent scholar and excellent student, earning top grades and scholarships, and gaining fluency in English and German.

Robert graduated from Silliman University High School in Dumaguete City, Philippines, in 1951, and, in 1953, completed his pre-medical studies at the University of the Philippines, College of Liberal Arts, in Quezon City, Philippines. In 1959, he earned the Doctorate of Medicine from Far Eastern University Institute of Medicine, in Manila, Philippines.

From 1959 to 1961, Robert served as Guest Physician at the University of Heidelberg, in Heidelberg, Germany, having received a fellowship under the auspices of the international Deutsche Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service).

From 1961 through 1966, Robert completed his internship and residency/fellowship, respectively, in Englewood, New Jersey (Englewood Hospital) and in Memphis, Tennessee (University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Division of Neurology).

His research publications focused on seizures with onset after 40 years of age and parasagittal cortical atrophy as a cause of primary lateral sclerosis, as well as on electroencephalographic studies in sickle cell crisis in adults (presented at the 8th International Congress of Neurology in Vienna, Austria).

Between 1966 and 1975, in addition to his private practice in neurology, Robert served as Head of Neurology and EEG lab at the Chinese General Hospital & Medical Center in Manila, Philippines, and for two years served as the hospital's Assistant Administrator.

In 1975, Robert immigrated with his wife and two daughters to the United States, ultimately practicing neurology in Northwest Indiana and serving multiple hospitals in the area for decades.

After 53 years of practicing medicine, for which he was recognized by the State of Indiana, Robert retired at the age of 81 and moved with his wife to California to be closer to their grandchildren.

Robert was an avid reader and consummate learner, taking up Spanish and American Sign Language in retirement. He continued playing chess and bowled regularly well into his early 80s. He found immense joy in the uniqueness and brilliance of each of his children and grandchildren.

Robert will be remembered for the peace, love, and faith in God that he shared with so many. Uncompromisingly principled and highly ethical, he actively embodied perseverance, integrity, honesty, fairness, excellence, and social justice in his life.

Robert is survived by his wife, Amelia; his daughters Saralyn Minnie C. Ang-Olson (Jeff) and Marybelle C. Ang (Gautam); brother Henry (Rosie); grandchildren Olivia Ang-Olson, Ansel Ang-Olson, and Beata Ang-Dutta; and numerous nephews and nieces.
