Robert Webb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 17 to May 18, 2017.
Robert V. Webb MT. PLEASANT - Robert Vaughn Webb died peacefully on May 15th, 2017 at the age of 97 years after a short illness. Bob was born on July 12, 1919 in Atwater, Ohio, the son of the late Vaughn Manley and Grace Bosworth Webb. He graduated from Brecksville High School in Brecksville, Ohio in 1937, and graduated from Hiram College in 1941. He married Bessie Cary of Tennessee on July 20, 1946. In 1952, Bob graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Later that year he opened his first dental office in Ravenna, Ohio where he practiced general dentistry for 9 months before he was called to serve 2 years in the United States Army Dental Corp and was stationed at the Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Upon his honorable discharge from the United States Army in May 1955, Bob opened his dental office in the Webb Medical Building in Ravenna, Ohio, joining his two brothers, Walter Webb, M.D. and Edward Webb, M.D in that building. The Webb brothers remained close throughout their careers and Bob often reflected on his pleasure of seeing his brothers every day at work. During his three decades of living in Ravenna, Bob was active in his professional organizations, his community and his church. He was a Life Member of The Akron Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association, and the Americal Dental Association. He served on the Ravenna Board of Education for 13 years, serving as its president for 3 years, was an active member of the Ravenna Kiwanis Club and the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce, serving a term as president in each organization. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Milan, Tennessee and a member of the Egypt Temple Shrine of Tampa, Florida. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Ravenna both as an Elder and as the President of the Church Board for several years. Dr. and Mrs. Webb were also charter members of the Seven Springs Prebysterian Church in New Port Richey, Florida. After his retirement from his dental practice in Ravenna at the end of 1985, he and his wife Bessie left the harsh winters of northeastern Ohio and moved to the Seven Springs Golf and Country Club in New Port Richey, Florida where they both enjoyed playing golf and participating in many social activities. Bob was an avid golfer and played golf three and four times a week until the age of 92. He also served on the Board of Governors at Seven Springs for four years. One of his valued accomplishments during his early retirement was helping his wife research and write books on the Webb family and the Cary family history. These remarkable collections are treasured by generations of family members. In 2012, Bob and Bessie moved to Somerby of Mount Pleasant in South Carolina to be near their daughter. An engaging and gentle man, always with a twinkle in his blue eyes, Bob was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Bessie during their 70 years of marriage, a supportive and caring father, a wonderful brother and uncle, and a great friend to many of the people at Somerby. He was especially proud of his surviving family, including his daughter, and the many nieces, nephews and cousins who enjoyed his company over the years. Dr. Webb is predeceased by his parents, Vaughn and Grace Webb, and his two brothers, Dr. Walter B. Webb and Dr. Edward A. Webb, all of Ravenna, Ohio. He is survived by his wife Bessie of Mt. Pleasant, and his daughter, Sally A. Webb, M.D. of Charleston, SC. His daughter would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful staff at Somerby of Mt. Pleasant for their kind and considerate care while he lived there, and to send special thanks to Erin Wilson of Somerby for her heartfelt friendship during the last 5 years. In addition, thanks go to Piedmont Hospice, Home Care Assistance and the many physicians and staff at MUSC for their compassionate care during the last years of his life. In lieu of flowers the family had requested that gifts be made to the MUSC Children's Hospital Fund for the New MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital; 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston, SC 29425.
