Robert Watson Strachan Young
With sad hearts we announce the passing of Robert Watson Strachan Young, age 82, of Weyburn and formerly of Alameda. Robert passed away with loved ones by his side on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Regina General Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Art & Zella; brothers, Clayton, William and Edgar; sisters, Kathleen (Harvey) Shier and sister-in-law, Lydia Young. Robert is survived by his three brothers, Howard (Dot) Young, Jack (Fae) Young and Don (Marjorie) Young; one sister, Mildred (Dale) Morrison; sister-in-law Margaret Young; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was born at Alameda in Nurse Bolton's Nursing Home on March 23, 1932, the sixth child of Arthur and Zella Young. He received his grade & high school education in Alameda. Robert attended the School of Agriculture in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in the spring of 1953, with a diploma in Agriculture. In 1957 he started to farm with his brothers Howard and Edgar. Robert joined the Alameda Masonic Lodge #27 in 1956 in 1967 he joined the WAWA Shrine Temple. He was an active member of the Alameda United Church, serving on the Board of Stewards as treasurer for 27 years. In 1964, Robert was elected Mayor of Alameda serving 25 years and also as a councilor for 9 years. He worked in the oilfields as a battery operator for 20 years. In 1969 he attended auctioneer school in Mason City, Iowa. Robert was also a charter member of the Alameda Lions Club. He retired from farming in 1995. Before his retirement, he started attending the World Curling competitions in Canada, USA and Europe for over 25 years. Meeting people was one of things he enjoyed most, between Arizona in the winter, the lake in the summer and Alameda and Weyburn between times. He had many friends far and wide. Family, family, family, and friends, were all so special to him. He was a wonderful and special brother, uncle and friend. Everywhere he went he knew people, and would stop and visit. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be given to the Alameda United Church, Box 231 Alameda, SK. S0C 0A0 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children c/o Estevan & District Shrine Club, Box 216, Alameda, SK. S0C 0A0. A service to celebrate Robert's life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from the Alameda United Church, Alameda, SK., with Mrs. Sandy Dalziel officiating.
