Roberto San Martin Obituary
Dr. Roberto San Martin was called Home on March 31, 2019 at the age of 73. He was surrounded by his beloved family. He is survived by his spouse, Raquel San Martin; his children, Jenny Read (Doug), Bobby San Martin (Michele), Katie Weal (Brett), and Mandy San Martin; mother of his children, Ellen San Martin; his grandchildren, Mackenzie Read, Garrett Read, and Cameron Read; his siblings, Dr. Jose San Martin, III, Dr. Antonio San Martin (Yolanda), Dr. Jorge San Martin (Yolanda), and Mary Nelda San Martin; his sister-in-law Minerva San Martin; his uncle Vicente Marotta (Elsa); and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Jose San Martin, Jr. and Adelina Marotta San Martin, and brother, Dr. Arturo San Martin.
Roberto was born on September 20, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas. He attended St. Paul Catholic School for most of his elementary years. During his Catholic education, Sister Veronica Dobson and the Brigidine Sisters ignited a love and passion for the Catholic Mass. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1963 and received his bachelor's degree in 1967 from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his master's degree from the University of Houston in 1969. In 1974, he graduated from the UCLA Medical School in Los Angeles, CA.
Roberto then served in the US Army as a Captain working in the Emergency Room at Fort Hood. After his service, he entered the Ophthalmology program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. San Martin began private practice in 1980 in the downtown area. His office was located across the street from his father's optometry clinic in the Alameda Theater building. Roberto was proud to continue the family tradition led by his dad and brothers to provide primary eyecare. Dr. Jose San Martin, Jr. and his five sons were well known and respected Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in San Antonio.
He began his involvement with the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Corporation which he nurtured until his retirement in 2018. Dr. San Martin served as Chief of Ophthalmology, Chief of Surgery, and Chief of Staff while at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital. His last tenure serving on the Board was from 2015 until 2018. He often described this experience as ""the fun part of medicine"" because he learned so much from his colleagues.
Dr. Roberto San Martin was a life member of the Bexar County Medical Society, where he served on multiple Boards. He was Board Secretary (2004-2005), International Community Chairman (2011-2018), Vice President (2007), and proudly served as President in 2009. He served in the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates and was with the Board of Trustees Medical Association Insurance Trust for 9 years. Throughout his years of service, he developed many friendships and gained the admiration of his colleagues.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Roberto San Martin loved to spend time with his family. He was a very proud and supportive father and grandfather. Whether cheering on his kids/grandkids, the Cowboys, or the Spurs, Roberto was an avid sports fan. He displayed his favorite sports memorabilia in his office and was always eager to share the details. A home theater was always a must for Roberto. He passionately planned movie nights to watch new releases and classics. Star Wars was a favorite, along with other Sci-Fi, Action, and Spy Thrillers.
He enjoyed serving the community that was often underprivileged. He was known to see patients without charge because they could not afford a doctor's visit. He would tell them to thank God, not to thank him. Dr. San Martin often prayed with his patients in their exam rooms and every patient left hearing him say, ""God bless you!"" In addition, his surgical patients received a special blessing on their foreheads.
Roberto's desire to serve others did not stop in San Antonio. In an effort to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, he joined the medical mission group, Quijotes of San Antonio; Ambassadors of Health. The group travels to Oaxaca, Mexico each September. Last year's group included 70 travel members who provided multidisciplinary health care to over 3,000 people in a 5-day period. His participation over the last 23 years brought foresight to the organization. The involvement and collaboration with The University of the Incarnate Word and CHRISTUS Health System ensures the survival of the mission. The friendships he developed with physicians and the dignitaries of Oaxaca were a result of his commitment to the mission. He loved sharing his talent and time with the people of Oaxaca. Dr. San Martin always tried to see the face of God in each and every patient.
He will be greatly missed.
FUNERAL SERVICES
Visitation will begin on Sunday, April 7, at 5:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 P.M. at the Angelus Chapel.
Visitation will resume on Monday, April 8, at 9:00 A.M. with the Funeral Mass to be offered at 10:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78230. Services will conclude at the church.

He helped our daughter, Kayylen, to get her first pair of glasses when she was born with a withered tear duct and had us follow-up with Dr. Donald Hollsten for eye surgery. His heart was noble, his character was dignified, and his presence was palpable. As Shakespeare once wrote of what a man should be -

Dr. San Martin was a friend, a gentleman with compassion and caring. As chair of the International Affairs committee of BCMS he made us all enthusiastically participate with the Kumamoto delegation visits. With the sister city and sister medical society involvement with Chennai, India he fostered the relationship. He was a happy person, genuinely interested in people. He will be missed by many. I looked for the good doctor at St. Mathews this evening.
I used to see you and Raquel there. You did cataract surgery on my mothers eye. You made her feel so special, even taking a selfie with her right after the surgery. I took her to her follow up right before you left for a missionary trip to Mexico. I was fascinated, very interesting, and down to earth. You shared about the group of doctors that would all go help the indigenous people near Chiapas. I come home and saw your obituary and I was so sad to see that. My mom will be so sad when I tell her. Robert and I were classmates at Central where he exhibited the qualities he demonstrated his entire life: thoughtfulness, strong faith, intelligence, and compassion. My first impression of Roberto was informed 40 years ago. I was an entering first year, and he the senior chief resident in Ophthalmology at UT Galveston. Roberto knew that Antonio and I had become fast friends in medical school, and I assumed THAT explained Roberto's careful attention and concern for my training as a new resident. But I was mistaken. As I learned in short order, Roberto showed the same selfless, tireless consideration for each and every resident in our department. I think that is why residents, faculty and our chairman held him in such very high regard. Over the 40 years that I knew him, it was apparent that this consideration in service to others was his lode star. Witness his many years of service as a medical staff officer for Santa Rosa. Witness his rise to prominence as a distinguished president of our medical society. Witness his participation in the many medical missions to Mexico with Los Quijotes. An most certainly, witness the excellent care he delivered to his patients while practicing the true art of medicine. Roberto was a gentleman of integrity, of faith, of charity, of family. And to complete the tale, whenever I met him, he ever seemed of good cheer and of boundless sense of humor. Is not the entirety of that a winning combination? We could all learn from his example. I know I certainly did. Rest in peace Dr. San Martin.

Roberto was a wonderful and loving brother. All his life was an example of humanitarian love. Dr. San Martin was one of kind! A friend, a physician whose professional knowledge made his patients feel safe and well taken care of. We are thankful for having Robert in our lives for more than 55 years plus. We enjoyed house parties in high school and our friendship and association continued till God called him home. Roberto was many things. He did the hard work required to become a
physician and an ophthalmologist. He was a wonderful surgeon who loved
his patients and in all his years of practice did not suffer one
malpractice suit. He proudly served our country as an Army Medical
Corps Captain.
He participated in, and at the end chaired, the 20 years of the Los Quixotes
medical missions to Oaxaca, Mexico. He cared for our
parents for the many and difficult last years of their lives.
He was honest, considerate, generous and humble. I was never aware of
anyone angry with him. He treated everyone he encountered with
respect.
He felt that his greatest accomplishment was his special love of God,
his wife Rachael, his children and grandchildren. They gave him
strength in his valiant fight against his disease.
I am sure that when he went to his final meeting with God, many, many
stars did shine with this special greeting...

Roberto and I grew up together. Our parents were extremely close as were Roberto and I. We played baseball with each other as well as against each other, during our grade school years. If you were to look in the dictionary for the definition of integrity, you would find the name of Roberto SanMartin. His nature was to be honest and his heart was full of generosity towards others.
He spent his life serving many others less able to pay for his services and never knew the meaning of the word NO. You would have to place him in the listing of who's who of REAL MEN. Men are defined as those males who possess a spirit of love and commitment to God and his fellow man. A willingness to serve with dignity and confidence of his actions and devotion in service to all. Roberto, followed in the foot steps of his Father, who he loved and respected. He was a leader among men and was respected by all who knew him.
He was the older brother I never had. One day is his examination room, we were talking and he asked me " why do you address me as Doctor, instead of Robert?" As I explained, "You know we were both raised the same way. You earned the title of Doctor and therefore, earned the respect I should give you." He simply smiled and said thank you.
He also told me, he was so much in love with has wife Rachael. He cherished her beyond his dreams. She was his joy and his life. Meeting her, it was easy to understand, why God put them together.
I will miss him so, I will think of him over and over, and no one will ever replace him.
Enjoy heaven, I hope to be there one day with you. I will bring my bat, glove and ball, in case you forgot them
