"..the fog is rising" Emily Dickinson
her last words... 1886
...and if i go, while you're still here,
Know that i live on, vibrating to
a different measure-
behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You willnot see me so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar
together again, both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest
and when you need me, just whisper
My name in your heart..I will be there.

Kindred spirits, Robin Brailsford 1953-2025
Just ever so seldom you meet someone that thinks alike, at the same time challenges you to think different and is also a very very dear friend. In words or maybe even more in actions. You see what they do or you hear what they speak about and it all inspires you. Our dear friend Robin Brailsford was like that. Ever since we met so strangely coincidental, we met in Banff in April 2000 although we were actually supposed to have been there two month before, we, Ineke Vandoorn, Robin and me, started talking and we never stopped. Talking about art, about our lives, about anything that moves us and seeing the beautiful work she did as an artist she was an incredible inspiration. Someone that dared to be on the edge (regardless of what the rest of the world might think). When we met Wick Alexander, her partner and an incredible artist, this only became more intense and so did our friendship We would sometimes be exhausted as we had so much to tell, so much to talk about.
Robin was the one that gave Ineke and me the opportunity to work on our jazz impro opera Alice in Space in her house in the mountains outside of San Diego. That was also the inspiration for my album The Lonely Coyote and it was Robin who said to me: here read this and write an opera about it; which, after many years, I am actually doing now.
We share so many memories of our visits, the trips we made, the many letters written on postcards (in a handwriting only Ineke could read), the FB messages, the Skype conversations, the Christmas boxes. Over a week ago we lost Robin, we lost a soulmate. I am so sad that we could not say goodbye due to the distance. There was still so much to talk about and share.
My heart and thoughts are with Wick, Ineke and Robin and Wick´s friends and family.

Last month I lost a very dear friend, the wonderful, brilliant, creative, inventive one-of-a-kind artist Robin Brailsford. Who delighted the world with her giant mosaics, her extravagant and beautiful jewelry, her boundless energy and inspiring insights. In 25 years, Robin and I sent each other hundreds of letters and emails. She also sent me books, photos and gifts and surprised me with works of art. For example, on the occasion of the release of my latest CD, she sent me handmade Sonia Delaunay-inspired art shoes!
Marc and I have special memories of our visits to Robin and Wick on their mountain in Southern California, where we were hosted in their airstream, talked for days and worked on our improv opera Alice in Space, among other things.
I'm very sad about her passing also because she lived so far away and I couldn't say goodbye to her. It feels strange to lose someone with whom I was so close, when almost no one in my immediate circle knew her. Hence this tribute to a special woman who brought so much color and inspiration to my life and whom I will miss so much. My thoughts are with Wick, her friends and family. Robin Brailsford 1953-2025

Robin, we all will miss your physical presence. Although we spent little time together, we were aware of each other in many ways. Through your mother who was a sister to my mother, to our trip to El Paso and your wedding exhibition in the little gallery of Juarez, to your move to California and the development of your studio with Wick. Your spiritual presence will live on, as will your projects that you brought to brighten the world for all. The world is better for your work, but will never be the same without you.

Robin was my dad's first cousin. Even though she has lived far away most of my life we kept in touch. Most recently, by Facebook. I will remember her as a strong, independent woman who would speak her mind. Then there was her incredible talent that I followed on her website and on FB. I have always admired her Public Art and hope to travel to see it in person one day.
I send my condolences to Wick and her brother, Brian. I'm sure you're missing her deeply. Hope you find comfort in the weeks ahead.

I am still in shock as I´m sure so many are. I was her sculpture student at Loyola Marymount University. We went on a field trip to create site specific art in the desert (way before Burning Man!). It was an incredible adventure that I´ll never forget. I´m so glad we stayed in touch over the years, and really reconnected when my mom befriended Newton Harrison. My husband and I enjoyed visiting Robin and Wick in their beautiful artists home. She was always encouraging and so full of life...it is hard to accept I´ll never see her again. My deepest condolences to Wick, Brian, and all her beloved friends and family. Fly free, dear Robin.

Robin was my first semester freshman college roommate at Syracuse University. She was so incredibly talented and confident that she stood out in a School of Art filled with promising, aspiring young artists. We lost touch after my one year at SU, when I transferred to art school in San Francisco. Decades later, at a land use conference in Sacramento, I stopped to read the label on a remarkable painting in the city convention center only to find that it was Robin's work. I tracked her down, and we reconnected. I was not at all surprised to learn that she had achieved great things in her art career, innovated processes, and was always pushing boundaries. Through her beautiful public art, Robin truly did make our world a better place. Sincere condolences to Wick, Brian, and all who knew and loved this fierce and talented warrior for beauty and meaning.

My heart has been wrenched out of my soul. Dear Robin, I remember walking West Beach with you, our tiny kitchen in a closet on M Street, Takanase Beach Club in winter, and all the crazy letters across the continent. My heartfelt condolences to Wick and Brian and Robin's many, many friends. An incredible light has gone out in our lives.
