I just learned of Rod's passing. I knew him as my GP when I arrived in Vancouver in 1974. He and I shared running as a passion. He was a very caring and sincere person. Qualities that I know others try to emulate because of him. Thanks Rod.

I had the privilege of knowing Dr Rod Andrew over many years, initially as part of the IMG community and later as a mentor. He was a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope for us, IMGs. As mentor, he encouraged me to see beneath the surface, and to become the best I could be. He believed in me when I was at the lowest point in my career and life, and was a major part of my support system at that time. In 2016, during my training, I found Dr Andrew in hospital, later diagnosed with ALS. Despite his diagnosis, he remained the same strong, positive, open and inspiring person I knew. His forward thinking and actions opened doors for IMG's integration in the Canadian medical system, and his memory will live in our hearts forever.

Dr. Rod Andrew attended at my birth in Red Lake, Ontario, in 1966. My parents thought highly of him. I contacted him many years ago for his Red Lake memories and he was most gracious, humorous, and thoughtful. He wrote that he thought that I was the first or second child he helped to deliver in Red Lake but laughed when he mentioned that he could be off - that after seeing hundreds of babies emerge, they all started to "run together". I will think fondly of him and work to ensure that his contributions to the history of Red Lake are recorded.

Rod was our family physician--and family friend--all through my teens. He remained my parents' doctor during most of the 20+ years I spent out of the country. When I got married, Rod, Cecile, and Laura were at the wedding. Meanwhile, at some point he had delivered the baby who grew up to be our next family physician after Rod retired!
I remember him as a warm, clever, and often hilariously funny man. There was a particularly entertaining visit in Paris in about 1982. And there was the day we found a heron tangled up in garbage in the sea off Stanley Park seawall. I will never forget Rod and my dad--one of them hanging headfirst over the water and the other sitting on his legs so that he wouldn't fall in. They did retrieve the heron, and it bit them in thanks.
Time with Rod was always memorable!
My deepest condolences to his family near and far.

Rod was an inspiration to those of us teaching Family Medicine and running training programs for Family Practice Residents. The work he did in creating a program to train foreign Medical Graduates was not only inspirational but ground breaking. So many are in his debt. The assistance Rod provided to me as a mentor, colleague and friend will never be forgotten. God Bless his family.

A great mentor, friend, teacher and physician. There are so many doctors working in BC because of Rod's efforts, there are so many others involved in teaching due to his example and encouragement. A gentle, yet effective and tireless person. Like everyone here I feel a great loss and send my condolences to his family. We were all lucky to have met Rod and to have been exposed to his light and inspiration.

Rod exemplified the best of family practice - approachable, good humoured and knowledgeable about general medicine.
As a teacher he taught well both the obvious and the hidden curriculum.

Dr. Andrew was a caring, dedicated and excellent physician. On behalf of the Association of International Medical Graduates of British Columbia will forever be thankful for all the support and evaluations for IMGs during many years. He had helped with his guidance so many of our IMGs members to successfully enter into the health system in BC.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a caring, warm and dedicated physician and teacher. I will always remember Rod's unflagging optimism and cheer. He was an inspiring mentor in medical education, generous with his time and wise in his counsel. His contributions to cultural education for physicians helped shape a generation of culturally competent physicians in British Columbia. Rod, you will be missed.
My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Rod was a true gentleman, a mentor, a colleague and a wonderful and caring friend who was also a great golf buddy. One of his lasting legacies will be the many IMG family physicians he mentored and who are now practicing medicine in BC. I took over the PRA-BC program from Rod. His impact has been enormous. We are thinking of Cecile and Rod's large extended family at this difficult time. Rest in Peace my dear friend Rod. We will never forget you.

Thank you Rod, our paths have crossed but for a very short time that your energy and positive outlook in all your endeavours will be remembered. As a golf friend in your vast golf network, one will miss the many trips, the sharing of stories and the sharing of the occasional Scotch bottle.

Congratulations for a life lived with determination to excel, love for the practice and the teaching of family and community medicine, and a career dedicated to being a mentor, and guiding physician in the education of our colleagues.
My condolences to your family. It is wonderful to have known you all these years.

We have had the privilege of being neighbours and friends with Rod and Cecile. "Dr Rod" as he was known to our grandchildren, was truly one of a kind. He viewed life in the most positive light and we admired him for all his accomplishments, his wit, his intelligence and the determination and dignity he used in his battle with ALS. We will miss him greatly but will never forget the impact he had on all of us.. He will live in our hearts forever.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Andrew's passing. He was our caring and compassionate family doctor for over 40 years. After he left his practice I was always thrilled to meet him striding along Burrard Street in his white coat. He will be greatly missed in the medical community but memories of this wonderful gentleman will live on through his family, friends, former patients and students. My deepest condolences to the family.

Rod was truly a remarkable and amazing man. I had the privilege of golfing with Rod and immensely enjoyed being his room mate on out of town golf trips. His book of memoirs capture his many good intentions up to 2012. If Chapter 26 was written, two highlights would be his recognition as 2016 Family Physician of the Year and the first winner of the annual Rod Andrew Invitational Golf Tournament. His memory will live on in our hearts and minds.

Dr Andrew was a fantastic family doctor. My mum was one of his early patients in Vancouver and he took care of our family for 30+ years. He had such an impact that my mother cried at her last clinic visit with him because he had helped her through so many stages of life. He was approachable, knowledgeable, and a great role model for the many physicians that were fortunate to train with him.
