Roger Ewing Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2026.
Roger Lawrence Ewing, an American actor whose breakout television role as Deputy Marshal Thad Greenwood on the long-running Western "Gunsmoke" helped shape a generation's view of frontier justice, died December 18, 2025. He was 83 years old.

Born January 12, 1942, in Los Angeles, Ewing grew up watching the show on which he would later star. While still in high school, he appeared in a satirical variety show version of "Gunsmoke," foreshadowing the role that would later define his career.

Ewing briefly attended college for one year, and he worked as a lifeguard before committing to acting full-time. He made his first screen appearance in 1964 with an uncredited role in the comedy "Ensign Pulver" and soon guest-starred on popular series including "Bewitched," "The Baileys of Balboa," "Rawhide," and "The Bing Crosby Show."

In 1965, he made his initial "Gunsmoke" appearance as Ben Lukens. Later that year, producers cast him as Clayton Thaddeus "Thad" Greenwood, a young deputy marshal in Dodge City. Ewing appeared in more than 50 episodes of the iconic CBS series through 1967, becoming a recognizable face to households who tuned in for classic Western storytelling.

After "Gunsmoke," Ewing continued working in television, with roles on "The Mothers-in-Law" and "Death Valley Days." His final film credits included "Smith!" (1969) and "Play It as It Lays" (1972), after which he retired from acting and pursued new passions.

Outside of entertainment, Ewing cultivated a successful career as a professional photographer, traveling extensively through Europe, Mexico, Russia, and the South Pacific. Later, he became active in community life in Morro Bay, California, even campaigning for a city council seat in 2003.

Roger was always a gentleman of impeccable character. Roger was private; he engaged you to talk about yourself. He willing shared his local political views and advice during Public Comment at city council meetings. He was polite in his comments. Due to his even temperament, he was respected by all sides. Socially, he was kind and non-judgmental.

Roger lived the last 40 or so years of his life in Morro Bay CA, where he participated in City politics and endeared himself to everyone he interacted with. He was self-effacing and private and even his closest friends here did not know much about his past accomplishments before he lived among us. It was only at his passing that friends recounted bits of his life he told to each separately that we had a better picture of his life before Morro Bay.
Finding out he had a National Roger Ewing Fan Club is a huge surprise!
So let me be the first to declare myself a member of the Morro Bay Chapter of the NATIONAL ROGER EWING FAN CLUB!
Here are a few pictures to help fill in his life for those of you who were a part of his pre-Morro Bay life.

To the family of Roger: My sincere condolences and prayers. This is
Cynthia Clinger Dobbins. I started Roger's national fan club and was
his national president when Roger started on Gunsmoke. He and I
worked closely via mail and phone to make the Roger Ewing Fan Club a
success. I told Roger how much that meant to a young starry eyed 17- year old girl in West Virginia to be a "part" of Hollywood and thanked him for the opportunity for such when I last corresponded with him in 2012.
This 76 year old lady now will close a very dear and rewarding chapter of her life that Roger made possible, for which I will always be grateful. Thank you Roger, and may you rest in peace.
Love,
Cynthia C. Dobbins
