Roger Hughey
January 8, 2022
Wichita, Kansas - Roger Dee Hughey, age 78, died to this life and began his eternal life on January 8, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy; his daughter, Rebecca Hughey; and granddaughter, Eleanor Hughey, both of Austin, Texas; and his daughter, Amy Hughey (Jeremy Brownstein), of Nashville, Tennessee. He is survived by his four siblings, Barbara (Bill) Grant of Denver, Colorado, Robert (Laurie) Hughey of Wichita, Joseph (Marilyn) Hughey of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Kathy (Doug) Bauer, also of Wichita. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey; and by his parents, Hubert and Barbara Hughey.
A lifelong Wichita resident, he was a graduate of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School in 1961, St. Benedict's College, Atchison, KS in 1965 and Kansas University Law School in 1968. His life with Nancy was a delightful adventure to share with their girls. He treasured his ever-evolving faith life and his being a vital part of the St. Vincent de Paul Parish family for over 34 years.
Roger enjoyed a 49-year career in law practice, mostly in commercial real estate. He often said his year as President of the Wichita Bar Association was the most fun of his career, and he later felt most honored when he received the WBA's Howard Klein Award for professionalism. He reveled in his fitness – a gym devotee until early 2020 when the Covid pandemic prevented daily attendance. As he gradually moved on from law practice, he went about retirement as though it was his second career, seeing every day as a new opportunity for growth. He seemed pretty orthodox, but he had a nonconformist streak that would surprise even those close to him. From Eagle Scout onward, he enjoyed community activism and the recognition and contributions of his career and service work. However, his most valued achievement was learning in his later years to let go of the external validations that he'd sought in his youth and coming to value the blessings that mattered most.
His family would like to thank the caring and devoted staff at Harry Hynes Hospice, especially Carole, Rita, and Tiffany, the Chapel Side Unit at the Catholic Care Center, and the many friends, family, neighbors and community members who have supported Roger and the family these last years.
Vigil Services will be held at 7 PM Thursday evening, January 13th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Andover.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Friday morning January 14th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Ascension Cemetery.
Family requests in-person service attendees be masked and vaccinated. Mass will be livestreamed for virtual attendees through St. Vincent's Facebook page or YouTube channel.
Donations may be made in his memory to: St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 123 N Andover Road, Andover, KS 67002; Harry Hynes Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202; Wichita Bar Foundation, 225 N. Market, Wichita, KS 67202.

I am greatly saddened to hear of Roger's passing. He was a fine person and a terrific attorney. I knew him when I was clerking while in law school. And I knew his brother, Joe, from HS and college. Kind regards and prayers for the family.

Dear Nancy and other Hughey family members - I just learned of Roger´s recent passing. He and I were close classmates at St. Benedict´s and had occasion to speak with each other from time to time about our respective legal careers. He was a true gentleman and friend and I offer my sincerest sympathy to all. May he Rest In Peace and may his memory always be with you. Bob Sidman

Nancy I am so very sorry to hear of Roger´s passing. He and you were such a big part of my faith journey and for that I shall forever be grateful. I know your heart is breaking and he was your rock. Rejoice in knowing very few know that kind of true love and devotion and you were two of the chosen ones. You and the girls are most certainly in my heartfelt prayers and Roger is rejoicing with your son. May peace and comfort surround you as you journey down memory lane with the girls and Roger´s many friends and colleagues. Godspeed Roger!

Our love and prayers for you and your family,Nancy. I think the first time I met Roger was when we brought him communion on fridays when he had brain cancer. To see him return to a fairly normal life after that was a miracle to me! He became a good friend and we so enjoyed having him in our Centering Prayer group. He was always very inspiring! We know he is sharing his joy still!
Love, Sharon
