Roger Sweet Obituary

BERLIN - Roger Earl Sweet, 78, of the Northfield Road, Berlin, died Friday, March 26, 2010, at Central Vermont Medical Center.

He was born in East Corinth, Vt., on July 27, 1931, the son of Earl F. and Helen (Sterns) Sweet. He attended schools there and graduated from Bradford Academy in 1948.

Following graduation, he entered the United States Army serving from August 24, 1948, to his discharge on August 24, 1951. He played trumpet in the U.S. Army Band and during the Korean conflict, he fought in the battle of Kunu ri and was awarded three Bronze Stars.

Roger married Betty J. Emerson in East Corinth. They recently had their 59th wedding anniversary on March 16th. They have five loving children together. He was an avid reader and enjoyed country & western music, loved horses and his dog, Dandy.

Mr. Sweet was the manager for Singer Sewing Center in Rutland for many years. The family later moved to Montpelier. Roger worked on the service counter at the Montpelier Post Office from 1978 to his retirement in 1993. He also owned and operated Sweet's Real Estate which he ran from his home in Berlin.

He was a member of VFW #792 and the American Legion.

Roger is survived by his wife, Betty of Berlin; three daughters, Charlene M. Hopkins and her husband Michael of East Montpelier, Helen A. Bryan and her husband Shawn of Berlin and Lisa J. Turner of Berlin; two sons, Howard E. Sweet of Waterbury and Paul R. Sweet of Barre; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Caroline Codling of Metter, Ga.; two brothers, Craig Sweet and his wife Jean of Lebanon, N.H., and John Sweet and his wife Marjorie of Williston, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Mayda, and a brother, Monty.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 3rd, at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier. There will be no calling hours.

Burial and military honors will be in the spring in Berlin Corners Cemetery.
