Roland Ferrera Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2017.
Roland Luigi Ferrera, 75. Madison, West Haven, Sun Lakes, Arizona, Leominster, Massachusetts.

Roland L. Ferrera 75, passed away at home on October 20.

He leaves his loving fiance and partner of 18 years, Nancy Hartzell; son John D. (Bunky) Ferrera, daughter-in-law Anna, grandson John M. (Jake) and granddaughter Monica L., of Davis, California; son Michael J. (Runt) Ferrera; son-in-law Gregg Boyd, of Los Angeles; former wife and mother of their two sons, Esther Riggs Ferrera, of Madison; many loving nieces, nephews and cousins across the country and in Italy; and patriarch, Uncle Oscar P. Thrasher, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Roland was born to Dorothy (Dot) Thrasher and Luciano (Luigi) Ferrera in Leominster. He graduated in 1960 from Leominster High School, and from Arizona State University (B.S. Construction Management) in 1967. He was President of the Sigma Lambda Chi National Construction Fraternity, and President of the ASU Construction Society. He has greatly enjoyed his continued relationships with classmates through the years.

After a few years on construction assignments throughout New England, the Ferreras lived in West Haven for seven years before building their first home in Madison in 1975. For the past several years, Roland and Nancy have enjoyed winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona. He was active at St. Andrews Church for many years, serving as a Youth Group Coordinator and Deacon. He was also a member of the Exchange Club of Madison for many years.

Roland had a long and distinguished career as a Construction Executive and project manager for such internationally-renowned companies as AMEC, Bovis, Sverdrup and Gilbane. Having started as a laborer, he worked in virtually every role in the industry, appreciating every contributor to his projects from tradesmen to the CEO. Most recently, he formed the Ferrera Construction Group in 1996, using his decades of expertise to advise an international clientele on all facets of planning, development and construction. He was active in the national Associated General Contractors, sharing his knowledge and mentoring young construction professionals.

Roland was a world traveler and loved his family above all else. He most enjoyed visiting his sons in California and his ancestral home and relatives in Rome, Italy, and his Falmouth family at the Cape. His grandchildren were his favorite topic of conversation and greatest source of pride. But, all of his relatives felt how important they were, enjoyed his laughter and storytelling, and being the center of his attention.

Always one to enjoy others' company, Roland deeply valued his friendships and the competition with his partners and opponents at the Madison Country Club and with the Shoreline Golf Society.

He will leave a large hole in many hearts.

A wake will be held on Tuesday, October 24, from 5-8 pm at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 25, at St. Andrews Church, 232 Durham Road, Madison. A brief ceremony will take place at the West Cemetery, Boston Post Road before a reception in his honor from noon – 3, at the Madison Beach Hotel, 94 W. Wharf Road, Madison.

To the Ferrera family. Although I did not know Roland well I only knew him by Michael. I'm sure he was a good man. I send you my deepest condolences. I wish I could be there to pay my respects personally but being here in Arkansas makes it very hard. God bless you Esther, John and Michael.

For the past 18 years it has been our privilege to have had Roland in our family. It is painful now, but in our hearts we know he was happy and living his life the way he chose (travel, family, golf, dogs, etc...).

He was a gentleman to the core, always thoughtful, caring, respectful, truly genuine, and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. The Huminski family loved and respected him (even the Yankee fans and Republicans lol), but most of all Nancy loved him. Thank you Nancy for making the choice to live your life with Roland (and for answering that 3rd voice mail), he has touched each of us. We were truly blessed.

Danny was able to see Derek Jeter's very last game thanks to Roland. It was a THRILL of a lifetime (for a Yankee fan), and he will always be appreciative. When he was asked to be a pallbearer, he was honored and grateful.

Our condolences to Nancy, John, Michael, and families. It was sincerely nice to meet all of you.
Peace to you, Luann and the Huminski Family

Roland was a true gentleman and one that I was proud to call friend. Roland always made you feel like you were truly cared about. I will miss our occasional visits in AZ and our conversations via email and text.

My prayers for all of the family. A big hole will be left, but I trust that I will see him in heaven one day.

Nancy, it was wonderful to know you as well and you will also be in my prayers

May you all feel the arms of GOD wrapping you in his love at this time.
