Roland Heddins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2024.
Roland Jeffery Heddins, a man whose life was reflected in his relationship with Jesus and love for people, graduated to heaven on November 23, 2024, at his home in Garden Valley, Texas.

Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on October 17, 1960, to Charles Roland and Barbara Ann (Daigle) Heddins. He was the oldest of four boys and was raised in a loving Christian home. He gave his life to Jesus at age thirteen.

Roland spent his formative years in Rosario, Argentina with his family, where he developed a love for travel and a fluency in Spanish. This international experience instilled in him a curiosity for people and shaped his spiritual worldview. The family later moved back to Louisiana in 1971 when Roland was eleven.

A graduate of Sulphur High School (Class of 1978), Roland furthered his education at McNeese State University, where he received his Associate Degree in Electronics Technology in 1980. After college, he worked for a natural gas pipeline company until 1983.

In 1983, Roland attended a discipleship school at the late Keith Green's Last Days Ministries (LDM) in Garden Valley, Texas, where he served on staff for over a decade, utilizing his technical and translation skills. While living in Garden Valley, he began to attend a church that later became Community Christian Fellowship (CCF). In the mid-1990s, he did freelance work as Heddins Electronics providing electronic repair/wiring services and went on short-term missions trips around the world with YWAM and Mercy Ships. In 2003, he joined CCF and later served as the Technical Manager and Missions Pastor until his death.

In 2001, Roland faced a life-threatening battle with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma cancer. This challenging situation deepened his faith, refreshed his relationship with God, and inspired him to minister to others what he had learned about the spiritual roots of disease.

Roland's passion for genealogy started early. He began exploring his family history by examining his grandmother's collection of old photographs. At the age of thirteen, he embarked on a journey of personal interviews, recording conversations with his grandparents and other relatives on cassette tapes. He later attended numerous family reunions, armed with his 35mm camera and a close-up lens so he could capture the old photos that people would bring with them. Over time, Roland honed his skills as a videographer and photographer, documenting his life and family's history. Roland's interest in genealogy was intertwined with his love for people. He valued the connections he forged with hundreds of distant cousins over the decades.

Throughout Roland's life, he was a connector, a historian; he was a spiritual innkeeper of facts, people, places. His big open arms provided love for his family, his alumni groups, his church family, his thousands of friends made during global mission trips. He facilitated many reunions and kept the memory of people and past events alive in the present. He continually travelled all over the world to spend time with friends and they travelled to Texas to spend time with him. He was a whole heart lover; if he loved one person, he loved their entire family. He had eyes to see the wanderer, the lost, the invisible. He was a watchman staying on the ready to hear God's voice about the needs of others. He respected and held space for people who had different beliefs from his own. By earthly means, he wasn't well known, he lived modestly, his furniture and clothes were often hand-me-downs. He didn't take himself too seriously and he had a great sense of humor. At some point, Roland figured out how to simplify his life to a focus of loving God and loving people (Mat. 22:37-39).

"Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die." John 11:25-26

Roland's family was important to him and he remained close to them throughout his life. Preceded in death by his father, Charles Heddins (2011), and brother, Stuart Heddins (2015). Survived by his mother, Barbara Heddins; brothers, David Heddins (Kathy) and Jonathan Heddins; nieces and nephews, Caleb Heddins (Christy), Delia Hernandez (John), Ryan Heddins, and Ethan Heddins; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Jesse Tassin, Jaxton Thibodeaux, Colin Heddins, Logan Heddins, and Natalie Heddins.

A celebration of life service will be held on January 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM CST at Community Christian Fellowship in Lindale, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CCF Missions Committee.

¡LO EXTRAÑAREMOS!

Beloved brothers and sisters of CCF,

Sunday November 24, we received the heartbreaking news of Roland Heddins´ passing. We know that both you and we have felt a deep pain and a sense of emptiness. However, in the midst of this sadness, we are comforted by remembering that Roland was a faithful son of God, a man whose holiness and love for the Lord elevated him to heights far greater than his physical stature.

We met Roland here in Guatemala during CCF´s mission trips, and from the very beginning, we learned to look up to him-not just because of his height, but because of his unwavering character and faith. His physical stature was never a barrier to feeling his closeness as a true servant of God. His teachings and the way he connected with the people in our villages reflected a man filled with the Holy Spirit and the love of Christ. Moreover, when we traveled to Texas, Roland always greeted us with contagious joy, offering exceptional hospitality. There, we felt loved, respected, and valued. Truly, as we say in Guatemala, "Roland was an angel in the flesh."

For us and our children, Roland will always be remembered as a dear friend and a deeply beloved brother. We greatly enjoyed his company. During the COVID season in 2021, we had the chance to travel to Texas and embark on a road trip to Cincinnati with the Ellmans. We thought Roland would join us, but unfortunately, he wasn´t able to come along. Upon returning from that beautiful trip, he welcomed us at Bill and Cindy´s house and, with his impeccable Argentinian Spanish, asked, "¡¿Me extrañaron?!, Did you miss me?!" We all responded enthusiastically, "Yes!" We then shared all the adventures we had experienced, and between laughs, the twins would tell him, "Here Roland would´ve hit his head," or "Here Roland wouldn´t have fit." He would burst into laughter at our stories, and together we enjoyed an unforgettable moment.

It´s hard to accept that he is no longer physically with us, but we are comforted by imagining him in the presence of God, enjoying His love and glory. I can picture the Lord embracing him tenderly, while Roland, with his characteristic humor, remarks, "The world doesn´t know what they´re missing."

Roland has simply gone ahead of us. We are confident that when we reach the heavenly kingdom our Father has prepared, we will find him there, as joyful as ever. After having seen the Lord, he´ll surely look over at us and say with his unmistakable accent, "Did you miss me?!" And we, laughing, will answer with a resounding, "Yes!"

Dear CCF church, we want to express from the depths of our hearts: Be strong. God is with you, embracing you during this time of pain, just as He is with us. It is true that Roland´s departure was unexpected and difficult to understand, but we trust that the Lord has everything under control and a perfect purpose for those who love Him.

Roland leaves gaps in the church, in missions, and in multimedia. We trust that God will fill these gaps with the right people, even though his absence in our lives leaves a pain that only the hope we have in Christ can heal. His departure leaves a void, but it also fills us with cherished memories because Roland had the gift of adding value to the lives of everyone he met. He was a man who knew how to touch hearts and leave indelible marks.

We share with you the words of hope and life from Psalm 116:15, which describe who Roland is now and encourage us all to trust in God´s promise:

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants.

In Christ,

Héctor, Patty, Carissa, Aaron y Benjamin Pivaral Guerra

"Rollie" was a gentle giant of a man. Filled with the love of Christ. And a huge heart for people of all kinds of backgrounds.
A dear precious friend I got to know at LDM back in 1984-1985.
We shared the same birthday, along with J. Scott, but different years.
We three were the "breakfast crew" for a few months there.
Roland was "Goliath," standing even taller than he was on a 50 gallon barrel, and I "David" at his side, short & ruddy, for a ministry teaching example!
I miss him.
I miss all my LDM brothers & sisters.
One day we will see each other again...

Roland (Sir Roland to me) and I (Genesser to him) never worked together or ministered together. We were just friends. I met him when I started attending CCF. When we met, there was an instant connection, and we found we were kindred spirits, agreeing on most things. He was a lover of Jesus who held true to his convictions with a firm but gentle and humble heart. The conversations we had about the Lord and about anything else that came up were always so interesting and fulfilling, and we would joke with each other at the end of a big conversation about how we were "solving the world´s problems together". He became one of my closest friends because of all those deep conversations.

I loved to spend quality time with Roland. We would go out for lunch sometimes. He would call me up and ask me if I could come keep him company while he went to Sam´s Club. After getting our groceries, we´d sit and have a soda or something and visit. The time together was something we both appreciated and enjoyed. The day before he left for heaven, he suggested our going on a hike to Mineola Nature Preserve together. I´m really thankful for the time I had with my dear brother Roland, one of the sweetest, kindest people I´ve ever known, and I miss the time I no longer have with him. He is now with his best Friend, Jesus, where he wanted very most to be, and I can´t wait to see him, hear his deep voice, and talk with him again in eternity!

My entire family loved Roland from the first time he came across our paths in the late '80s. Mom (Diane Orozco) once said, "They don't make them any better than Roland." He was a gentle giant with a heart that matched his stature, the smiling face you were always happy to see, and a man of integrity and deep convictions. And yet, he was utterly winsome and real at the same time, with a chuckle that is still rings in my memory. Jesus must be so happy to have his good friend Roland right there! One day we'll be there too, but for now, how deeply missed he is...

From the first time I met Rolo at my I.C.T. at L.D.M in 1983 I new we were destined to be best buds. We shared a room in a trailer out in the woods and made some amazing memories through the years that followed. Pame and I will greatly miss our beloved brother and look forward to catching up with him in heaven.

Roland had such a big heart. Was such a good shepherd caring for others and especially other missionaries on the field. He came out to Norway and visit and met
my fiancé at the time/now husband. I remember him sharing stories of his many adventures around the world. I am sure he is having a blast now with Jesus and meeting many generations of faith hero´s like himself! I fond memories of him and remember him behind the computer at CCF making beautiful videos for lyrics during worship amongst many other things. Looking forward to see him again soon!

A big loss to me and my family. We talked much at LDM and after. We always talked in our birthdays for 40+years ; both in October. He was the glue that held all LDM together and in touch. He has been to our home in North Dakota and we were very close. We would talk for hours at a time.
At LDM he would watch my 2 children.
He was great with children. He had a great laugh. He could keep a confidence. He knew how to be a friend. He loved his family of birth and his extended Christian family. I personally do not know anyone who did not like him. He loved God and will be greatly missed by all!
This is a great loss!
My heart goes to his mother and siblings as he talked about his family much.

We met Roland on the Anastasis circa 1994 when he was volunteering in the computer department. He couldn't stay too long on board because the doorways and passages were so small and he was banging his head a lot. Then we reconnected at CCF church where Roland was working and we attended. He visited us when we were in England in 2015/16 and I was always amazed that where ever he traveled he had friends that he had to meet up with. In England it was a Polish man who worked in Engineering on the Anastasis. Roland was a non stop servant using his gifts for the glory of God and the good of others. Most recently he was the designated photographer at our Returning Hearts Day in prison. The picture is from our 2023 trip to Cuba where Roland shared in Spanish and made fast friends with our translator Jose. It was a shock to hear of his passing but we know he is at rest with the Lord.

I'm happy that he's with his loving Lord. I pray God's love will shine in and through us as we process this and carry on, and be inspired by Roland towards loving his Lord and pleasing Him. He was my best friend. But I'm sure many could say that. We had sooooo many good times and talks together. So glad to have finally had a brother I could look up to.

As newbies to LDM during a personally tumultuous and uncertain season, Roland was one of the men who God used to reassure us that we were in the right place at the right time. Bob Ayala was another, and I can only imagine the joyful reunion they´ve shared awaiting the rest of us. I will be forever grateful for this gentle giant who touched our lives and planted seeds of Family in our hearts.

Roland wasn´t my oldest friend, but he was my brother. Even though I only knew him for about 2 years, he quickly became one of my closest and dearest friends. We would always stay in touch every other day even though we live countries apart, he always had time to chat, listen and advice. The first time I saw him was on one of mission trips to Cuba, where I translated for his team, and we immediately got along. I loved his sense of humor! We both had passion for technology and serving the Lord, so we had plenty of things to talk about. Even touch we spent months (almost a year) without seeing each other, we would always stay in touch and aware of how we were doing. I was honored to join him virtually on some of the Spanish meetings, which I´ll always treasure, and got to also know some friends that loved him too. Every advice, every joke, every quick message, every tech talk, every call and every memory will be forever treasured. I long to see him again at the Father's presence when the time comes. He truly was one of a kind.. Abrazos, ché!

I am heartbroken at the loss of Roland. He was beloved by his family and was a mainstay of that family, keeping everyone in touch, arranging reunions, and of course, creating that amazing geneaology that is so valuable to us. He was always helping someone and was so generous with his time and life. I miss him greatly. He was a special person I feel privileged to have known.

My condolences to Roland's family. Never saw him angry. Never saw him quick to offer an opinion that would debase anyone. He was to me one of the most grounded stable people I ever knew. I'm glad to have known him and have experienced his kindness and humor first hand.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.

I was so shocked to hear of Roland's passing and pray for his family and close friends as they grieve for their loss :( I met Roland when volunteering at LDM in late 1983 before starting an ICT in 1984, then on to YWAM Japan. I enjoyed working with Roland as we worked up until the Christmas break on one of the new dorms. On one of the last days he was upstairs and asked I let him know when his dad arrived to visit. As the door wasn't yet fully fitted I later heard someone near the entrance and could only see someone from the neck down (as the person was SO tall) so called up to Roland, "I think your dad is here" (as Roland was quite tall :) I kept in irregular touch via facebook/email (as I now live in Australia) with Roland and Bruce Taylor, and recall he had a bout with cancer, etc. but had been healthy. I also recall the miraculous photo of Roland's visit to his mom's place and their retreat to a storm celler just in time - as a tornado completely destroyed his mom's house. Bless y'all heaps! My late husband Bob, our daughter Kara first met Roland in 1992 when Bob came to LDM to help Allan Carrngton set up the Print Production School with University of the Nations (YWAM). We moved to Texas in 1993 to join the staff of the school, so were at LDM from 1993 until LDM shut down. We remained in touch with Roland, and attended CCF for many years. Roland had a great way of making you feel at ease and ok to be yourself with. One tradition we had was a to wish him a Happy Birthday because he and Bob shared the same day, though not the same year. So I'll miss that next year... I miss the encouragement and the challenges Roland gave to us. I will miss watching him with kids - though not a dad he has made friends with many young people over the years which was great.

I met Roland on the Anastasis and enjoyed visits from him since then. Sadly, we weren't able to see him often as he lived far from us, but he always made an effort to see us if he was in our area. Roland truly role-modeled God's command to love God with all of your heart and to love your 'neighbor'. We are so sad we won't get to see him again on this earth but rejoice in the fact that we will get to see him in heaven again! Praying for the whole family!

Hi, my name is Evan Watson. I met Rolando(as I always called him, he called me Evanly) when there was a meet up between ywam(twin oaks) and ldm. I was looking at the crowd and of course he stood out at 6ft. 8. Lol. Just had a casual conversation but it became a friendship. Later, my parents left twin oaks and moved to ldm(which later became ywam too) whenever I saw him we would just chat and enjoy each other's company. In time, I lived out on my own but always checked in with him and would spend many rainy days hanging out at his apartment in lindale, drinking coffee and watching star trek. Yes he was a trekkie or trekker depending. We also worked together on occasion. That was always fun and we would laugh alot. He has such a great sense of humor.
He never loses it, even when things get a bit dark or trying. His bout with cancer had us on an edge but through God, friend's prayers (and a bit of pharma maybe)he was healed. In time, he moved into the neighborhood where I lived and I would stop by and say hello or stop at ccf and harass him lol. Was just looking at our text string. When I heard he had passed, I was devastated, I still am and my family is as well. We are also glad he crossed the finish line. And I know that God has said "well done my son!" I miss you, brother, but know we will see each other again. Side note. I encourage everyone to tell funny stories or whatever. Let's celebrate his life and his homecoming, even in our grief.

Roland was a RARE person who truly put into practice his faith in everything He did! His absence will and has been felt for many who had the privilege to know him! Our loss but his gain knowing he ran the race for the prize set before him which is Christ and we know he is now resting in Him! He shall surely be missed! Condolences to his family and friends! A bright light has been taken from this world but may we who knew Roland continue to carry it onward as we know He would want us to!

Roland I met during one of his trips to the Mercy Ship Anastasis. We were in Spain for repairs if I recall. We hung out one weekend afternoon ashore where I learned we had common friends (his family) in my hometown in the central Louisiana area. He would come here for the occasional family reunion. We continued to stay in touch.
To me, his life exemplified service to the Lord´s church through mission work, and to the lost and searching. A humble man with a modest and kind heart. It was a pleasure to know him.

One of my first memories of Roland that really sticks in my head was after I got baptized in July of 1983, and a group of us young people from church were riding in a car together, going to Long John Silvers in Sulphur to have a celebration lunch. It was kind of a surreal experience as a fairly new believer, having only been saved since May 19 of the previous year and this was the beginning of July, to be sitting in this car with all these new friends and just talking about Jesus and what we thought of different Scriptures passages. Another memory is that Roland had a wonderful laugh which he shared often with others. We didn't get to spend a lot of time together but when we did it was always an encouraging time.

I remember Roland from a very young age when my dad, Darrell Stanbery, would take me to the family reunions. My first thought was how he towered over everyone, then I remember thinking of how nice and how interesting he was. I loved how he captured the family history. I loved following his journey through social media. What a wonderful life he had! I´m thankful for ever crossing his path and being a distant cousin of his. May he rest in peace.

Our family (Heddin, Sanders, Kinnison) fell in love with Roland when we first met him years ago. His faith in and love for our Lord Jesus was always very evident. I was especially grateful for him, as our Lord gave Roland a love for foreign missions. That is what God sent my wife and me to do for about 38 years in Southeast Asia. Roland is a man after God's own heart. Hope we live near him in heaven!

Roland had a heart that was too big even for his body. He loved deeply and gave even more. His friendship over many years and help to my family when I couldn't be there in person will never be forgotten.
I will miss our talks and his great big hugs.
He made the near impossible task of packing mum and dad up to move back to NZ possible even with video call guidance.
Looking forward to catching up again in heaven some day.

I never got the chance to see him in person. One day, years ago, I received a message from him telling me that we were related. He was very kind to me and always put a smile on my face.

I remember him holding me when I was a toddler. 15 years later, I still call him my uncle. Not by blood, but by spirit. He was an incredibly godly man. He only made friends, not enemies.

His mom and dad were our Sunday school teachers at Metropolitan Baptist Church and they had fellowships at their house. All of the Heddins boys were there. I later became friends with Roland on FB and watched his many travels.
