Ronald Currens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2025.
Ronald Bryce Currens, Jr. (Ron)

July 26, 1949 - April 30, 2025

Ronald Bryce Currens, Jr., affectionately known as Ron, took his final journey on April 30, 2025, joining the great jam session in the sky - the one where the music never ends, the Braves always win, and there's always a good story being passed around. He was 75 years old.

Born on July 26, 1949, Ron lived a life steeped in passion, loyalty, and a deep love for the things that made life rich: books, music, family, and baseball.

A proud Georgia Tech graduate, Ron carried his Yellow Jacket spirit everywhere he went. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and remained an avid Tech fan throughout his life, cheering on his team with the same loyalty and pride he brought to everything he loved.

A lifelong reader, Ron was rarely without a book in his pocket - a small but constant reminder of his endless curiosity. His love for science fiction was sparked early on by the works of Robert Heinlein, and it only grew from there. Among his favorite authors were Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, whose tales of adventure and heart mirrored the boundless spirit Ron carried with him.

Music ran just as deep. Ron caught the Allman Brothers Band's first-ever notes at Piedmont Park, and from that day on, the soundtrack of his life was filled with guitars, soul, and Southern skies. His devotion to the music helped inspire the founding of Hittin' the Note magazine, where he played a key role in celebrating the artists and songs that shaped generations.

Ron was also a true Braves fan through and through. For 35 years, he proudly held season tickets, cheering through every heartbreak and every triumph. Whether it was a bottom-of-the-ninth rally or a long, slow summer loss, Ron stayed loyal - because that's just the kind of man he was.

Above all else, Ron was a devoted father and a steadfast friend. He is survived by his daughter Angelica, his son Ronnie, and the mother of his children, Eva. His family - and everyone who had the good fortune to know him - will remember him not just for the passions he pursued, but for the love he gave freely, the kindness he showed without asking for anything in return, and the quiet strength he carried every day.

Ron wanted his final message to his loved ones to be simple, but from the heart:

"I love you, and I'll miss you when I'm gone."

His life was a song - full of soul, rich with stories, and played with heart - and though he's moved on to another stage now, his melody lingers on, carried in every story told, every note played, and every heart he touched.

I knew Ron for many years and was a guest in his home more than once. I always enjoyed talking music with him. I cherish some of his original concert photos that he gifted me years ago. I join a host of other friends who will miss him and are thankful to have known him.

I never knew Ron personally, yet I sort of did. When I first started collecting Allman Brothers Band live concerts on cassette tapes - pre Internet, the old Maxwell XL II 90 minute chrome tapes days - my friend the late Bob Levy gave me a tape of the Allmans from Central City Park in Macon, a very early show. On the "J card" where you would write the list of songs, Bob had written "date confirmed by Ron Currens".
I just wanted to pay my respects and say thank you for all you did for us Allman Brothers Band fans, most especially in the pre Internet days when information was limited.

Like so many (many!) people, I knew Ron (Hophead) from a mutual love and devotion to the Allman Brother's Band. For so many - via Ron's involvement with the Hitting the Note magazine, through countless meet-ups at concerts and through the many volumes of recorded live shows that he shared - Ron was nothing less than a musical sensei. I was always sure that I was the world's biggest Allman Brothers fan until I met folks like Ron, Joe and Bill Ector. Via these guys, I received a deeper and more formal education into all things Allman.
The world will be a sadder place in Ron's absence, this for sure. He will certainly be missed.
And gigantic kudos to whoever wrote the obituary! That just nailed it!

We were best friends from the age of 14 and I was blessed to have him in my life. We were in band together in junior high and high school, rivals when I went to Georgia and he went to Tech, and devoted Braves fans. We remained close over the years, and to me he was always. "Ronald B" or I would call him by the nickname his mom always used and that will remain our secret! He was so fortunate to have Eva in his life and they raised two extraordinary kids. I will miss our fun conversations and the sound of his voice. RIP, Ronald B.
