Ron was skipper of the gaff-rigged schooner C'est la Vie on her maiden voyage across the Atlantic in 1966.  He had helped build her in Denmark as had I.  This was the message I sent to the surviving members of the trans-Atlantic crew;
I thought you should know that Ron Emery died 08 October 2015, in the magnificent log home he had built on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. He had battled advanced prostate cancer for many years. A veteran of U.S. Army special forces, he will be buried in a military cemetery outside the city.
Ron was a man of many moods. We did not always get along. But in recent years, most of the rough edges were worn smooth. He was the fastest thinking man I have ever known. He saved my life twice. Once on the schooner. The second time, in the mountains of Honduras when I was surrounded by a machete-wielding mob, He could have stayed in safety in a darkened doorway and escaped the crowd. Instead, he pushed his way into the mob -- and pushed me through it -- playacting that I had disobeyed his orders to guard the casa carro, the motor home. "Lo siento mucho, jefe," I responded in Spanish so the mob would know how sorry I was. "We don't run until they run," he whispered. It took only a few seconds after he pushed me through the edge of the mob before they realized I had escaped. We tore through the darkened streets with a crowd of fifty in pursuit, and just made it to the motor home in time.
He risked his life to save mine. I only wish I could have done the same for him.
