Ronald Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2023.
Coach Ron Miller, Ph.D., M.d'A., retired head varsity fencing coach of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, quietly ended his journey of this life at his home, surrounded by his family. He was a bright light whose memory we will hold in our hearts forever.

Ron was married to artist Susun Coleman Miller since 2009. She was his fencing archivist for many years. They shared many interests, such as home remodels, gardening, cooking, travel and art. He was a master technical draftsman and many fencers have his stylized font on their gear. He also taught individual and group lessons for NCFDP and Apex Fencing Academy. When Ron retired, he began the compilation of several books, publications, and videos for fencing.

He was greatly loved by his family and friends, his team alums, staff, co-workers and thousands of adopted children that went through various fencing programs over the years. The fencing community has lost a great friend, mentor and advocate for equal rights.

He is survived by his wife Susun, daughter Caroline Miller Walton (Trent Walton) Graeme and Natalie - grandchildren, son Joseph B Miller (Katelyn Miller) Brooke - grandchild, and son Kurt Miller. He is also survived by step-daughter Myah Cook Drumm (Brian Drumm), Emma and Josie - grandchildren and step-son Grey Cook (Teresa Cook), Alexis, Dominic and Tyler - grandchildren.

Private interment of ashes will be at Memorial Grove at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A celebration of Life will be held in Chapel Hill to be announced in late summer.

There are so many words and yet there are not enough to describe the impact that Ron had on my life nor the loss that comes with his passing. Rest in peace Coach.
