Ronald Montgomery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2023.
Son. Brother. Friend. Golfer. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Runner. Reader. O's Fan.

Ronald D. Montgomery, of Charlotte, NC, passed away at the age of 74 on June 13, 2023, after a yearlong battle with bladder cancer.

Ron was born in Shelby, NC to Francis Irene Sepaugh and Robert L. Montgomery on April 4th, 1949. He enjoyed a happy childhood on Starnes Road with his three siblings. When in school at West Mecklenburg High, he met the love of his life, Rita Murphy, while working together at the local K-Mart. After graduating, they quickly got married and started their own family. They moved up and down the East Coast for many years working with the K-mart corporation, until they decided to make roots in a little town called Arnold, Maryland so they could raise their two girls.

While in Maryland Ron and Rita were active members of College Parkway Baptist Church, where Ron was a Deacon. They made many lifelong friends there, that even came back into their life in North Carolina years later. Ron was manager of the K-Mart in Pasadena, MD for many years, until he was asked to open a new store in Glen Burnie, MD. He successfully ran that store until both his daughters were young adults and he and Rita then decided to move back to their home state of NC.

Upon moving to North Carolina, Ron and his brother-in-law, Steve Tarrant, opened and ran PostNet for numerous years. They both enjoyed working together and the community they served in Fort Mill. They eventually sold the business to begin the next phase of life, retirement. He was an active member of Flint Hill Baptist Church of Fort Mill, SC since 1999. During his time as a member, he served as the church treasurer as well as the chairman of the administrative assistant church committee.

After retiring, he filled his time between playing golf, spending time with his family (especially his beloved grandchildren), reading, bike riding, and his newfound passion of running. Ron became an avid runner, working his way up to running many marathons (all after the age of sixty) and making many cherished friends along the way who were very dear to him. He was an active member of Run Far training group, as well as pace groups the Mighty Milers and Pace Cadets. As much as he loved running, the friendships he made during all those miles was what kept him motivated to keep going.

Ron was a very charismatic person who loved to share a good story to anyone who would listen, even if he knew you had heard it before. And if you wanted to talk politics, he was your guy, he enjoyed debating all sides. Ron had a truly kindhearted soul. He loved everyone and hated no one. With such a generous spirit, he will be greatly missed by all those who had the fortunate opportunity to have known him.

Ron was preceded in death by both his parents, and parent in-laws, as well as their child Ronald D. Montgomery II. He was survived by his loving wife, Rita Montgomery, of Charlotte, NC, daughter Julie and her husband Trip Lineberry of Hatteras, NC, daughter Leslie Montgomery and her husband Chris Haas of Annapolis, MD and their children Millicent and Bennett Haas. Sister Phyllis and Steve Tarrant of Mint Hill, NC, Brother Thomas and Shirley Montgomery of Patrick, SC, and youngest brother Robert and Suzanne Montgomery, of Raleigh, NC. Ron was blessed with many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored

.

Services will be held at Flint Hill Baptist Church, 269 Flint Hill Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715 on July 30, 2023, at 2:00 pm.

Ron´s dad and my dad worked together at WBTV and our families lived near West Mecklenburg High School. On occasion both families got together to visit, have cookouts or (my favorite) eat seafood at the Riverview Inn. As kids I remember good times playing in the woods, riding bikes, swimming at Shuttle's pool etc. Ron and I also played little league baseball on the same team with his dad as the coach and going undefeated for two years. I hadn´t seen Ron since our high school years but remember him as a friend and a really nice guy. Rest in peace Ron

I was a classmate with Ron at West Mecklenburg High School and, after many decades, was blessed to reunite with him at our school´s 50 year reunion and through our mutual friend Art McDonald. Ron was a very special man and he taught me so much about the value of an active life style for mature-age adults. We enjoyed sharing baseball stories. While God made the choice to have Ron enjoy the success of his beloved Orioles from the Streets of Heaven, I know that Ron is doing just that, and he will likewise reside in our hearts forever.

We loved growing up with our cousins when we were young and seeing each other at our Grandmother Carrie´s, and Uncle Jim´s, and Aunt Mot´s house. There was a lot of love in that house! In our early years of marriage, Daddy had family reunions at the lake house. We were blessed growing up with our grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family. We´re glad that Ron was a part of the family. Sending prayers of comfort for his family.
