Dr. Ronald R. Novales, PhD, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Evanston, Illinois, at the age of 96.

Born on April 24, 1928, in San Francisco, California, Dr. Novales pursued a life dedicated to scholarship and cultural enrichment. He earned his degree from the University of California, Berkeley, establishing the foundation for a distinguished academic career.

A veteran of the Korean War, Dr. Novales later settled in Evanston, Illinois, where he served as a professor at Northwestern University. Known for his rigorous scholarship and collaborative approach, he co-authored numerous academic papers that contributed significantly to his field. Upon retirement, he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus in recognition of his enduring contributions to the university community.

Outside academia, Dr. Novales was an accomplished pianist with a deep appreciation for classical music, literature, and art. His passion for learning extended beyond the classroom-he traveled to more than 50 countries over his lifetime, reflecting a lifelong curiosity and global outlook.

Dr. Novales was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara "Jean" Novales. He is remembered by his daughters Nancy (Jim) Hershey and their children Jacob and Nicole; Mary (John) McNichols and their son Chris (Caroline) and great-grandson Cameron; and their daughter Susan (Matt). His legacy endures through them and through all who were influenced by his intellect and generosity.

He was always supportive of his family's choices and often would say "It's your life-you lead it, you love it,"

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who follow in his footsteps.
