Ronald Ritchie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2013.
Ronald (Ron) Ritchie 1940-2013 It is with great sorrow we announce the peaceful passing, at home, of Ron on September 2, 2013. Predeceased by his parents Flo and Hugh Ritchie, Ron is survived by his loving wife Susan (Smith). A devoted father to his children, Elizabeth Pethes and Christopher Ritchie and very fond father-in-law to Marie and proud grandfather to Madeleine Ritchie. Ron was happily anticipating the birth of his second grandchild.

Ron will be greatly missed by his two sisters, Muriel (Bob) Myre, Jackie (Bud) Shannon; niece Joanne Burden and nephew Rick Myre and their families. Special son-in-law to Anna (late Norman) Smith and cherished brother-in-law to Francie and Patrick Heagney and fond uncle to their children and grandchildren.

Ron was a retired English teacher and football coach at South Carleton High School in Richmond, ON. After his retirement he loved to travel and write. He fulfilled his goal of authoring two published books. A lifelong sports enthusiast and avid tennis player, Ron was a longtime member of the Manotick Tennis Club and more recently at World Tennis Club in Naples FL. where he enjoyed many winters.

The family is grateful for the support of Dr. Gillian Puxty and Dr. Priscilla Bright, the CPMA team of doctors and the nurses and caregivers who made it possible for Ron to be at home. Also many thanks to our wonderful friends, neighbours and family who were constantly present and supportive.

At Ron's request there will be no visitation or service. As an expression of sympathy donations in his name to two of his favourite charities, the Ottawa Humane Society or the Ottawa Mission, would be appreciated.

Mr Ritchie was my favorite teacher. He was the only one who got me interested in reading. I haven't forgotten him after for 38 years. RIP

Dear Sue,

I saw Sonny today and he told me Ron had passed. Fond memories immediately came to mind and I wanted to pass on my condolesences. I remember Ron as a friend to my father and a great human being. He had a huge influence on me as I was growing up and for that I will be forever thankfull. I remember him as a Tennis Player (that I couldn't beat), a Runner (that I couldn't keep up with), a Hockey Player (who gave it all)... and most of all, an outstanding Teacher and Mentor. He was, simply put, a really, really, great person.

Dear Susan and Family,
I was saddened to hear of Ron's passing- such a tragedy at a young age. He was an outstanding department head, acting as a positive role model who took new staff under his wing and mentored them well. His students loved his teaching methodology- his agendas ensured that the class would end eventually. Ron was certainly concerned about his family- he mentioned you often. I enjoyed reading his two books, several times and will treasure them always. I have sent a cheque to the Ottawa Humane Society as I am well aware of his love of dogs. With sympathy, Nancy Boutilier of Manotick

Dear Susan, Elizabeth, & Chris,

I am so very sorry for your loss. Ron was an exceptional teacher, colleague, and mentor for me during my years at SCHS. I was inspired always by his dedication to his students, his genuine love of teaching English, and his commitment to his running regimen at school. He stood tall, possessed strong principles, and was a kind and gentle soul.
May your treasured memories provide you with some solace during this most difficult time.

Warmest regards,
Tracey Armstrong

Susan,
Jim and I have just learned of Ron's passing and we are just in shock. Our deepest sympathies. Ron has always been someone whom we both respected and admired. He always stood for the person who was not in the room when a discussion was ongoing. We are so happy we had the opportunity to have a dinner with both of you a little over a year ago. Our love and best wishes go to you and to your family.
Such a delightful smile!!!

Dear Susan: I just learned of Ron's passing and wanted to send my sincere condolences to you and your family. I remember Chuck and Ron swapping teaching stories when we met at parties at Jan and Vic's. Although we didn't see each other often, he always remembered my name. Hopefully, revisiting all the happy times will help you through this very difficult time.

The Ritchie Family. I would like to tell you what a great Teacher Mr. Ritchie was for me. He was my Home Room & English teacher at Woodroffe High School during the 1964 -65 school year, Mr. Ritchie help me learn to enjoy reading. He was a strong and steady leader who enjoyed the respect of those he taught. Funny I still remember his grey tweed jacket and the football he kept on his desk. I can see and hear Mr. Ritchie reading Mark Twain`s great novel Huckleberry Finn to our class as if it was yesterday. He made English fun for me. He made this world a better place by what he did for his students in the classroom and on the football field. May God bless and keep Mr. Ritchie, his family & friends.

Thinking of you all.
