Ronald Rowe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2024.
Ronald L. Rowe, 85, passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2024, in the company of his wife Claire, daughter Kim, and son-in-law Hugh.

Ron was born in Detroit, Mich. to Doris and Leo Rowe on July 5, 1939. His childhood was spent in Lincoln Park, Mich. and Jacksonville, Fla. His love of music began with flute studies at age 6; he played with the Jacksonville Youth Orchestra and attended the Brevard Music Center. Ron attended Alma College in Mich. where he pledged the TKE fraternity, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. After several years teaching music in Breckenridge, Mich., Ron relocated to Tampa, Fla. where he began his career in the music business with Schrader Music Service. Contacts he made there led him to a position with J.W. Pepper & Son, Inc., a Philadelphia music company. He opened branches in Atlanta, then in Detroit, eventually coming to the Philadelphia office as Sales Director and right hand to Pepper owner and friend Dean Burtch. He was promoted to Executive Vice President in 1973, and to President and CEO in 1990. A tireless innovator, Ron led his team at Pepper to embrace technology wherever possible. Under his leadership, Pepper programmers developed the most sophisticated order processing system in the industry. He was also a devoted manager and leader of the Pepper team, introducing work-from-home policies, flexible scheduling, and employee empowerment ideas that were far ahead of their time. He served on the Board of Directors of the Music Publishers' Association of the United States (MPA), and served as President from 1997-1999.

Ron's passion for sailing and the water took him on frequent trips to the British Virgin Islands, where he grew to love the community and culture and earned the nickname "Captain Ron." Following his retirement in 1999, he and Claire purchased Indigo Point on Great Camanoe, which they called their home for nearly 20 years. He enjoyed sailing and working on his Mason sailboats Autumn Passage (Mason 43) and Confetti (Mason 54), and was an active member of the Mason sailing list. He completed many blue-water sails, including an Atlantic crossing from the Cape Verde Islands to the BVI. In 2009 he achieved his goal of sailing single-handed from the BVI to Bermuda on Autumn Passage.

Ron's generosity and kind heart earned him life-long friends from all walks of life, but particularly among the working people of the BVI and the music business community in Philadelphia and across the US. He is survived by his wife Claire, daughter Kim, son-in-law Hugh, nieces Sheryl, Carole, and Marcie, nephew Russ, cousins Anne, Dan, Debbie, and Dianne, and so many others. His beloved brother Russell preceded him in death as well as his cousin Paul, mother Doris and father Leo.

Ron believed in the importance of music education and in helping young people learn, enjoy, and realize their potential in music and in life. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any memorial gifts be directed to Play On Philly at https://playonphilly.org/ .

The family will hold a Celebration of Ron's Life on Sunday, September 29 at Phoenixville Country Club, 355 Country Club Rd., Phoenixville, PA, at 12 p.m. RSVP by September 12 if you would like to stay for a luncheon following the celebration. Email [email protected], or text 610-761-4980.

Claire, I am so sorry to hear of Ron's passing. I so enjoyed working with him and you at Pepper back in the seventies. While it was a business relationship, I also thought of all of you as friend. Dean's and his invitation for me to sail with them in the BVI back in '75 led to 15 family vacations there.

Ron was an amazing business leader and a true gentleman. We first met in the early 1990s while he was at JW Pepper and I joined Hal Leonard. In a few years, I became President of HL and had the pleasure of working closely with Ron for many years. I will always treasure his integrity, smarts, humor and kindness. A wonderful man in every respect! God bless you, Ron.

I had only known Ron for about 4 years. After reading these testimonials, I wish I had known him longer. He was a sweet guy. Although my conversations with him were brief and professional, I could tell he was a strong, intelligent and genuine person. My heart broke when I heard the news of his passing. Claire, I'm so thankful to have known Ron, and I praise God for giving you the strength and grace to endure this hardship.

I met Ron and Claire in the BVI in 2004 through mutual friends, we swapped many sailing stories, I had just returned from a lengthy sailing trip with my then partner Laila. Ron made us a beautiful photo slide show of our photos, set to music of course, then edited a video movie of our travels as well, it took Ron a lot of time and effort to do this and these are still important treasures for me. We were lucky to see Ron quite often in the BVI over the next few years and spent time at their beautiful home as well as many evenings out. In 2006 Ron flew out to the Cape Verde Islands and joined us for our Atlantic crossing sailing directly to the BVI, he was the best Crew I have ever had on board any yacht, experienced, fun, cheerful, he consistently gave wise council and advice and made that crossing the best I have ever done.
When I look back at my life Ron is a character and man who stands out, he set an example to me of how to live a full life, to spend just the short amount of time that I did with him that I was lucky to be able to do enriched my own life greatly.

Sadly I moved away from the BVI and I haven't been able to see Ron or Claire for 15 years, but I still often think of Ron, who always brings a smile to my face and will continue to do so for the rest of my life.

Claire, Kim and Hugh all I can say is I am so sorry for your loss, I send you my best wishes and heartfelt condolences,

Ron was the most generous person I have ever met, so much so that it made me suspicious at first. I soon learned it was his true nature. He also made a mean gin and tonic that made leaving Indigo Point an often hazardous undertaking. May his memory be a blessing to everyone who knew him but especially to Kim, Hugh and Claire. He was an original.

Have truly lost my best friend. I meet Ron in June of 1971 on a sales trip he made to Sioux City Iowa where I was working. We made contact again in December that year in Chicago. Next thing I knew i was reporting to work on April 1st. 1972.

I could write a book about our lives together. To this day, I never miss a day not thinking about him. I will always remember him. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Claire, Kim, Hugh and the rest of the family and all his friends. He will be missed by many.

When I visited Indigo Point with Sally, Ginny and Sue, we were given the royalty welcome from our most gracious and fun hosts----Ron and Claire. It was a magical experience---their awesome home, the breathtaking mountainous island views, culinary delights and the unbelievable sailing trips.
On a sailing trip to one of the gorgeous islands for lunch, Ron said to me as we started to depart: "Vienna, take the helm because I know you can sail since you are living in Annapolis" Now this was Confetti / 54' Mason !! Whaat ?? I had never steered a 54' before but I was embarrassed and afraid to tell Ron--NO I can not. LOL !!! so I think I tried for a bit but then Ron took over. I was so impressed that Ron had such confidence in me !!!!!! what a guy !!!!!

Ron was a great human being. He made everyone feel important at JW Pepper. He taught us so much and we were eager to learn from him. The world would be a better place if there were more people like Ron. God bless Claire, Kim and his entire family. We were so lucky to have known him. He will never be forgotten.

I was working in a family owned music store, when the most amazing man walked in and began asking me questions about my job and what I enjoyed most. He was the most engaging and gracious person I have ever met. I was thrilled when I found out who he was, and that I would potentially be working for him. He always made me feel like there was nothing else going on in the world when we were speaking. I will forever be grateful for Ron, and all the people that he and J.W. Pepper brought into my life! I'm sending all the love and light to Claire, Kim, Hugh and the rest of Ron's family. He will be sorely missed.

Where do I start...

I had the privilege of knowing Ron for almost 40 years. Ron was my very first customer when I became a sales representative for IBM in the Valley Forge area in 1984. I remember my first sales call with Ron...his first words after our introduction were " Great, I get to train another IBM sales rep" said with that very devilish and kind smile. I didn't know then but that was the beginning of what was going to be a very long friendship both from a business , a personal , and a sailing perspective. I learned so much from Ron on all three of those perspectives. It was Ron and Dean that invited me to my first Blue water sailing trip. It was the delivery trip of Priority II from Miami to the BVi, stopping in Bermuda. I was kindly referred to as the swab and as such was tasked with all of the fun and exciting activities ... Like cleaning the heads...lol . " Got a job , do it well get a better job...get promoted from swab to Mate"
After that trip and exposure to the British Virgin Islands I was hooked.

Ron and I became close friends over the next 5 years during the time I supported him @ JW Pepper as their IBM sales representative.

I was fortunate enough to join Ron on several other blue water sailing crossings while we would bring the boat from the British Virgin Islands to Bermuda ,Bermuda to the Chesapeake and then back again in the fall. We also did numerous down island trips and all the island hopping locally around the BVI. Such fond memories of our times together and sailing. Ron said that sailing is described as 95% peaceful with 5% fast paced. After all, all good sailing stories start with " no s*** there we were....." Ron and I sailed close to 25,000 open ocean miles together.

After a few years of searching for a bigger boat we jointly purchased , "Confetti", a 54 ft Mason sloop in 2009. I remember one time shortly after we purchased Confetti , Ron said "I think it's only fair that we divide the boat and tasks equally".... So your half is everything from the water line below and I'll take everything from the water line above.
So here's a scrub brush ...have at it, and don't come up until the bottom is clean..... lol lol . He laugh so hard after that comment that we both stopped working and just enjoy a drink together in the cockpit... As we often did.

We also enjoyed competitive sailing together with other friends boats. It was Ron's idea to rig up surgical tubing with pouches so that we could launch water balloons at the other boats as they were trying to pass us. Little did we know that those water balloons would carry over a 100 yards....
Words do not capture all the fond memories we had together.

I will leave you with this thought :

After every Blue water crossing Ron would always break out a bottle of rum as a ceremonial drink regardless of the time of day. I recall coming into the harbor in St Lucia after about a 4 day trip at 5:00 in the morning.

Ron grab the bottle of rum and began pouring a generous portion for each of us. He then offered up a toast ... an appropriate toast to the crew, the boat, and the seas allowing for a safe passage. Ron always had great respect for the sea, the boat that provide safe passage and everyone around him.

I wish Ron that same safe passage in his the next voyage and look forward to seeing him on the other side.

We will all miss you !!

Never to be forgotten, Ron was the best friend ZB ever had on Great Camano Island. He was always there for us, and we spent many hours enjoying time at Indigo Point with Ron and Claire. Who else, but Ron, would insist on following in a boat while ZB swam to Guana, and bring him back. Ron was generous to his core, coupled with a kind spirit that made the world a better place.

Oh wow!! Besides Captain Ron, I also called him "Rescue Ron" as he was always rescuing us from being newbies on island and things didn´t work. He was a dear, dear friend and we´ll miss him terribly!

I have so many memories of Ron. He was a driving force at Pepper. He embraced technology and incorporated it into the business whenever possible. His loss for me is a great one. Ron´s faith in me at Pepper is what I will always remember. Ron was truly one of the great people. My condolences to Claire, Kim and Hugh.

I first met Ron in his kitchen in Malvern in 1989 after his daughter (my soon-to-be fiancee) and I had driven across the country coming home from a student orchestra seminar. My rusty 74 Chevy van was parked in his driveway and we must have both looked a complete mess. Anyway, we were sitting in the kitchen when he walked in and Kim introduced us. Without pausing, he shook my hand and said "Welcome! Would you like a gin and tonic?"

I knew we were going to be fast friends...
