Ronald Schubert Obituary
In addition to sports, Ron enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He found solace in reading the newspaper, challenging himself with daily crossword puzzles, and reading history novels. Cards were a staple in his house. His competitive spirit shone through when playing cribbage and sheepshead, as he was known as a fierce competitor.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Pat, and their children Stephanie (Bob), Steve, and Sue (John). He was a treasured grandfather to Jordan, Peyton, Patrick, Lauren, Paige, and Andrew. Ron's family meant the world to him, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Being the first granchild means I have to remember a lot of the memories for us grandkids. It also means I was everyone´s practice round. So as the practice grandchild- I had the privilege of feeling like I was one of the adults with Pat & Ron in Winneconne (even though that was clearly not the case).
I would sit at the adult table, as there were no kids my age, and I quickly learned cribbage - shortly after sheepshead. Grandpa was ever so patient with me as I learned (unless I spent too many times shuffling!) and would always be kind enough to let me know if I missed any points on my big hands. I spent many summer hours practicing and perfecting how to bridge the cards to shuffle well in front of all the grown ups. He was also one of the first few that instilled the competitive nature in me- as he always had the best, sarcastic card game banter. All the jokes and cribbage back talk made me see how being competitive could also be good natured fun - even if there was no way he´d let me or Pat win if he could help it. If it wasn´t raining, we´d routinely play cards at the patio table next to grandpa´s garden. Sometimes, before or after a few games - grandpa & I were in charge of picking veggies for Pat´s dinner recipes. I considered myself a professional gardener with grandpa as I was always in charge of picking the best beans while he plucked the tomatoes.
I´m sure many of you who spent time with Ron & Pat up north also know my grandpa as Captain Ron - and that´s how I will probably always remember him - behind the wheel of the pontoon boat. Being the only kid on a boat full of grown ups, coolers, coozies, & 5spf sun tan oil doesn´t sound like a kids dream at first... but I got to drive the boat with "Captain Ron". Captain Ron would always let me sit on his lap and drive the boat. He´d then take me to the sand bar so I could swim for hours in the sun. Then when I got hungry he´d drive me to the fin & feather or the nowhere bar so I could get my favorite mini corn dogs or chicken tenders for lunch with French fries. While we waited for our food - Captain Ron would often order a Manhattan or Old Fashion to pass the time and I would be either spinning in circles around the pole, singing to the music playing, or be given a few bucks to play the jukebox or a game. Then Captain Ron would call me over when his drink appeared to give me his cherries out of his cocktail of choice. And while I didn´t necessarily want my cherries dunked in grown up drinks-I´d pop them in my mouth anyways - because normally he´d get an extra special request of plain cherries on a stick after!
I can go memory to memory- Fourth of July fireworks & parades, watching grandpa read the newspaper as granny and I head to church & giving me the comics after we got back, finishing all the hard crossword puzzles, climbing trees, raking leaves, grandpa passed out at 7pm in his big fuzzy grandpa chair after saying he´s not tired as he watched the news or 60 minutes and sporadically waking up pretending he was never asleep. Hours of listening, watching, and talking about wisconsin sports- even if we were in the car on our way to dinner. Fishing off the dock or slowly down the channel. Grabbing the worms or leeches in the buckets for bait. Sitting by the campfire and making s´mores. Catching snakes in the yard & showing grandpa how cool they were. Finishing my math books in the kitchen. You in the backyard while I played with Greta the next door neighbor´s dog. Sitting in the garage with you & my dad watching the storms pass by. Eating breakfast together. Hearing you snore when I would wake in the middle of the night 5 rooms down the hall as I´d tip toed to the bathroom. Veal night at The Roxy. And last but not least- Jorgie´s fish fry & dice (my fave! because they had trifecta of mini corn dogs, the dice game, the fish fry, AND the playground!). While I will always cherish my childhood Winneconne memories, I will also remember the recent memories too. Carabas, driving the golf cart, the oyster bar, the pool, going to the golf course, Livingstons, O´Leary´s, and the turtle restaurant. The hot tub. Beach days. The stone pizza place. Bringing my best friend from college down and you making us laugh so hard we cried and jasmin almost peed her pants. Christmas. Family cards against humanity night where you STILL beat all us grandkids. Trying to relearn chess together. eating Egg foo young together. Being sous chef with you in the kitchen and chop all the fruit & veggies. Tag teaming on crossword puzzles where I could answer only one question-one pop culture music artist. Reading every James Patterson book made and Trying to find at least ONE book in the library you haven´t read (which is apparently impossible because I swear you read them all). The list goes on.
I will forever remember the memories and little moments I had with you. You were an incredible husband, father, grandfather, and captain. Rest in peace Captain Ron- you have touched so many and will be missed by us all.

The common theme I've been hearing about my dad is kindness. I love that so much. He was generous, loving, fun, thoughtful, and wise...just to name a few of his traits. I'm so grateful to call him my dad. He worked so hard and sacrificed so much to provide for his family. I hope he knew how loved he was. Rest peacefully, dad. You are so missed.

Saying my grandpa was the best grandpa I could´ve asked for is an understatement. Something about him just felt like home every time I saw him. He had a dry but really funny sense of humor, was an extremely smart man, and overall was a great person. I´ll miss playing cards with him, going to the pool with him so he could walk laps, and just being able to be with him. Grandpa I love you, rest easy.

The most significant memory of my grandpa was having him fill out a questionnaire book all about his life. I felt honored to learn fully about the life he lived, perspectives, and funniest memories. An unforgettable and one of kind gift of knowledge that money can´t buy. His legacy will continue on and never be forgotten. I love and miss you always.

On numerous occasions Ron and Pat invited me, my co-workers or my family members for a day of fun either on the pontoon or for a cookout. We had so much fun; going to their home in Winneconne, WI was the absolute best getaway. In addition, Ron made the best Bloody Marys ever.
I hope that there is a way to make things easier for Pat and her family right now. Hoping it will help a little just to know how much we care, just know that our prayers are with you. Rest in Peace!

Over the last few days, I have spent time reflecting on the past 22 years with my Papa. The first thing that comes to mind, him kicking my butt in cribbage while drinking a Manhattan every single time I visited. I got to go down to Sarasota and visit him one last time in May and I cannot even count how many games of cribbage we played. I will always look back on that trip and be so grateful we got to spend that precious time together. I also vaguely but fondly remember my weekends up in Winneconme where we would spend hours on the pontoon boat at the lake or you spent time teaching me how to fish and catch turtles. Papa, you fought so hard. You were the best Grandpa there was, so full of love and joy and always appreciative of the little things. You constantly made us laugh until our stomachs hurt and knew how to crack the best jokes. If there was one thing I learned from you, it is to always be grateful of the blessings God has given you, big or small. The world won´t be the same without you, but every happy hour I attend or cribbage game I play, I will always think about you.
